Races for two offices, District 3 supervisor and Northern District justice court judge, got their second candidates Monday as the last month to file began.

Betty Barnes Jackson, 61, who owns and operates Cherry Street Cottages Bed & Breakfast/Shlenker House, filed to seek the District 3 supervisor seat she previously held from 1992 until 1995.

Thirty-five-year Vicksburg attorney W.B. Duggins Jr., 75, filed to run for Northern District justice court judge.

Both filed as independents, meaning their names will not be on ballots until Nov. 4. Candidates seeking party nominations will be in primary elections Aug. 5.

Jackson, a former teacher and real estate professional, has served on many city and county commissions and in multiple civic roles. She is challenging Charles Selmon, 43, who unseated her in 1995. Selmon, a Democrat, is seeking his third consecutive term.

In the race for the judgeship, Duggins joins former Vicksburg police officer and political newcomer Greg Kurtz, 36, who had already filed for the post. Kurtz is also running as an independent. The incumbent in the post is Richard Smith Jr., who has not filed.

The deadline for candidates to file for this fall’s election is March 1. Hopefuls for countywide and county-district races may file qualifying papers with the Warren County Circuit Clerk’s Office. Those running for statewide, state-district and legislative offices may file for candidacy with the secretary of state’s office in Jackson.
