[2/5/03]Warren Central’s reward for blowing out Clinton on Tuesday is a fifth and final meeting with archrival Vicksburg High.
Ebon Williams had 15 points and eight rebounds, Saleda Montgomery added 10 points and Cookie Johnson grabbed 12 rebounds as the Lady Vikes beat Clinton 63-33.
The win clinched the No. 2 seed in next week’s Division 4-5A tournament for WC, and set up its fifth game of the season against VHS. Vicksburg has won three of the first four games between the schools this season, including a 64-60 decision on Saturday.
“I’ve said all along I don’t care who we played, I just would rather not play Natchez on their home floor in the first round. Well, to do that we had to win tonight. If we had taken care of business on Saturday then we would have been playing Clinton on Tuesday,” WC coach Donny Fuller said.
The Lady Vikes certainly took care of business on Tuesday night.
After Clinton’s Markesa Hughes hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 10-10 late in the first quarter, WC went on a 9-2 run to take a 19-12 lead at the end of the period.
The Lady Vikes then forced 11 Clinton turnovers, held the Lady Arrows to 1-for-5 shooting, and outscored them 19-3 in the second quarter to take a 38-15 lead at halftime.
“I think the pressure kind of got to them, and the other thing is we wore them down. We ran bodies at them, a lot of them,” Fuller said. “Our kids did a good job. I thought every kid came in and gave it everything they could, and it was a difference.”
(B) Clinton 68, WC 58
One look at a shot chart told the story for Warren Central coach Preston Wilson. Of the 27 shots Clinton made Tuesday night, only four came outside of the paint as WC lost by 10 points.
“They were just layups. We didn’t show up to play. We didn’t play defense at all,” Wilson said.
Dewayne Washington had a game-high 28 points for WC, and Ronnie Jones added 15. Janario Bunton led Clinton with 17 points, Sernell Ulms had 16, and Jariid Gibbs added 13.
The game was a close, physical affair throughout, but the Arrows used a 9-2 run early in the second quarter to open a double-digit lead. The Vikings got as close as five points on several occasions, but never regained the lead.
“That’s the cushion,” Clinton coach Bruce Robinson said of the early run as he pointed toward the scoreboard. “We kind of held on to it.”
WC will get another crack at the Arrows in the first round of the Division 4-5A tournament next week at Natchez.
“We’ve got to play them on Tuesday. You don’t want to lose to them, but hopefully we can correct our mistakes and get a win,” Wilson said.

(B) Enterprise 58, St. Al 55
