Nine file for public offices Friday

[03/01/03] A third candidate for Warren County Sheriff was among those who filed qualifying papers on Friday’s next-to-last day for fall election hopefuls to do so.
Gary Lick, who was not available for comment, filed to run for sheriff as a Republican candidate, Warren County Circuit Clerk’s office records show.
He was one of nine hopefuls who filed petitions Friday to qualify for eight of the county and state offices that are up for election this year. Party primaries for county and state offices are set for Aug. 5, with a general election set for Nov. 4. The deadline for candidates in all races to file qualifying papers is 5 p.m. today.
Lick is joined in the race for sheriff by incumbent Martin Pace, 44, an independent, and David Atwood II, 19, a Democrat.
Also filing Friday was a sixth candidate for circuit clerk, Beechwood Elementary School principal Jack Grogan, 51. As a Democratic candidate, he joined Shelly Ashley-Palmertree, 33, and Gil Culkin, 49. Also in the race for circuit clerk are independents Mike Caruthers, 47, and Bertha Conner, 55, and Republican Trey Miller, 36.
A fifth candidate for District 1 supervisor, Republican William Muirhead, who was not available, also filed. He joined in the race two other Republicans, incumbent David McDonald, 53, and Jerry Rushing, 43; and two independents, Billy Boone, 53, and Michael Terry, 56.
In the race for Southern District justice court judge, City of Vicksburg code enforcement officer Edward D. Miller, 38, filed as a Republican candidate. Miller ran unsuccessfully for Southern District constable in 1999.
He joins two Democratic candidates, incumbent Joe Crevitt, 65, and John Hunter, 62, in the race.
In the race for Central District justice court judge, Anderson White II, who was not available, filed as an independent candidate. As a challenger of incumbent Democrat Richard Bradford, 59, White will advance to the general election.
James E. Jefferson, 42, owner of W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home Inc., filed as an independent challenger to incumbent Rudolph Walker, 49, in the race for Central District constable. Jefferson was among the candidates Walker, a Democrat, defeated in a special election last year.
New candidates were also being reported in races for legislative posts. The state Democratic Party was reporting that Jefferson Countians Jesse Harness and Jerry Sims had filed in the race for District 85 representative. They joined in the race three other Democrats, Arnold E. Clark, incumbent Chuck Middleton, 43, of Port Gibson, and Jerry Sims.
And Philip Gunn of Clinton filed to challenge incumbent Jep Barbour, 41, a Yazoo City Republican, in the race for District 56 representative, the state Republican party was reporting.

County Prosecutor: Robert C. Arledge, 45, independent; Richard Johnson, 49, independent.
District 2 supervisor: Michael Mayfield, 44, Democrat.
District 3 supervisor: Betty Jackson, 61, independent; Charles Selmon, 43, Democrat.
District 4 supervisor: Carl Flanders, 33, independent; Reginald King, 56, independent; Bill Lauderdale, 55, independent.
District 5 supervisor: Richard George, 53, independent; Joe Wooley, 60, independent.
County surveyor: Joseph Strickland, 55, Republican.
Tax assessor: Richard Holland, 47, Democrat.
Tax collector: Patricia Simrall, 56, Democrat.
Circuit Court District 9 District Attorney: Gil Martin, 58, independent; Richard Smith, 44, independent.
District 54 representative: Chester Masterson, 69, Republican; Alex Monsour, 40, Republican.
District 55 representative: George Flaggs, 49, Democrat.
District 23 senator: Mike Chaney, 59, Republican.
District 36 senator: E. Vincent Davis, 39, Democrat; Lynn Posey, Democrat.
