Susie Gordon died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, at Shady Lawn Nursing Home in Vicksburg. She was 99.
Ms. Gordon was preceded in death by two children; eight brothers; and five sisters.
Survivors include two sisters, Estella Patterson and Rachel Bingham, both of Vicksburg; a niece whom she reared, Ethel Jones of Lorman; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Services were at 1 p.m. Saturday at Morningstar M.B. Church in Lorman with the Rev. Larry Clark officiating. Burial followed at McCay Cemetery under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home Inc. in Port Gibson.
William Hayes
ROLLING FORK William “Bill” Hayes died Monday, March. 3, 2003, at Kings Daughters Hospital in Greenville. He was 76.
Born in Walthall, Miss., Mr. Hayes had lived in Rolling Fork for the past 24 years. He was a Navy veteran and a former employee of the Sharkey County Sheriff’s Department, the Rolling Fork Police Department and the Issaquena County Sheriff’s Department. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Billie B. Hayes of Rolling Fork; a son, William Michael Hayes of Hollandale, Miss.; four daughters, Shelley D. Witenton of Rolling Fork, Debbie A. Davis of Indianola, Miss., Sherry Hayes of Baton Rouge and Wendy Hilmus of Greenwood; two brothers, James Hayes Jr. of Steele, Mo., and Edwin Durell Hayes of Crowville, La.; a sister, Kathleen Ray of Water Valley, Miss.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Glenwood Funeral Home Chapel in Rolling Fork with the Rev. Carl Barnes officiating. Burial will follow at Indianola City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be the grandchildren.
Charles Nelson
PORT GIBSON Charles Nelson died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at Claiborne County Hospital. He was 84.
Mr. Nelson was a member of Greater St. Mark M.B. Church in Port Gibson. He served in the Navy in World War II.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Kemp Nelson; and two brothers, Abe Nelson and Cecil Patterson.
He is survived by a sister, Esther N. Jones of Port Gibson; three nieces, Patricia Williams of Houston, Texas, Patricia Weathers of Vicksburg and Carlee Bailey of Greenville; a nephew, Robert Owens of Jackson; and other relatives and friends, including Tiffany Council, Patricia Council and Lakitha Council, the Heath family and the Tarleton family, all of Port Gibson.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Greater St. Mark M.B. Church with the Rev. Leon Howard officiating. Burial will follow at Thompson Memorial Garden Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 until 5 p.m. Wednesday at Thompson Funeral Home Inc. in Port Gibson and from noon Thursday until the service at the church.
Robert Raleigh Turpin Jr.
DELHI Robert Raleigh Turpin Jr. died Monday, March 3, 2003, in Delhi. He was 73.
Mr. Turpin was a resident of Delhi.
He is survived by a daughter, Gail Elizabeth Turpin of Oak Grove; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Eudora, Ark. Burial will follow under the direction of Cox Funeral Home in Oak Grove.
