Gators finish second at North State meet

[3/8/03]Vicksburg High qualified eight lifters for the Class 5A state meet and set three meet records while finishing second at the North State powerlifting meet on Friday.

The Gators totaled 43 points, second to Madison Central’s 47. Olive Branch was third with 23 points and Warren Central finished seventh with 12.

Vicksburg’s Darrell Williams finished first in the 165-pound weight class and set a North State meet record by lifting 1,310 total pounds. Anthony Sanders was second in the 165-pound class and set a meet record by squatting 550 pounds, and Phelan Gray won the 242-pound weight class and set a meet record by squatting 605 pounds.

Justin Randle also finished first for VHS in the 220-pound class, with a total combined weight of 1,405 pounds.

Other Gators who advanced to the state meet on April 11 at Pearl were Lorenzo Williams (second place, 114-pound weight class), Quinnard Williams (third place, 123 pounds), Darius Williams (second place, 148 pounds), and Derrick Hinkle (third place, super heavyweight).

Warren Central’s Deonta Selvy also qualified for the state meet by winning the super heavyweight class with a total combined lift of 1,460 pounds.

WC’s Danny Robinson finished second in the 132-pound weight class and will also move on to the state meet.
