John Howard Brown

OAK GROVE n John Howard Brown died Friday, March 21, 2003, at Sabine Medical Center in Many, La. He was 88.

Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his parents, Benjaman Franklin Brown and Mittie Brown.

Survivors include his wife, Eloise Brown of Oak Grove; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Cox Chapel in Oak Grove with the Revs. Woodson McGuffie, Fred Hale and Mike Ray officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ray Evans, Hookey Evans, Ray Stokes, Billy Jordan, Huey Evans, Glendal Stanley and Aubrey Evans.

Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Rider, Jack Smith, Charles Ed Davis, Junior Berry, James Gregory, Ernest McIntyre, Jimmy Orr, Reggie Prine, Harold Carpenter, Donald Brown, Wayne Gregory, Randy Rider, Kenneth Frith and Bobby Cooper.

Edwina Varnado Cade

PORT GIBSON n Edwina Varnado Cade died Friday, March 21, 2003, at Claiborne County Nursing Home. She was 77.

Ms. Cade lived in Hazlehurst for 30 years before moving to Port Gibson, where she lived for 27 years. She was a member of Port Gibson United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and China Shelton.

She is survived by her husband, Walter C. Cade Sr. of Port Gibson; a son, Ray Varnado of Ridgeland; a daughter, Jacquelyn Brown Flint of Biloxi; a stepson, Walter Cade of Port Gibson; a sister, Yvonne Brister of Fairhope; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Port Gibson United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Shelton Cemetery in Copiah County.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Monday until the time of the service at the Port Gibson United Methodist Church.

Memorials may be made to Shelton Cemetery Association in care of John Green, 11154 Highway 28 West, in Ridgeland, MS, 39083.

Pallbearers will be Richard Cade, John Cade, Robert Cade, John L. Torrey, E.G. Ellis Jr., Val Beasley, Robert Breazeale and Bobby Thornton.

Jewel W. Carpenter Jr.

Services for Jewel W. Carpenter Jr. will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Fisher Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Terry White officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 until 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Carpenter died Friday, March 21, 2003, at River Region West. He was 68.

A native of Arkansas, Mr. Carpenter had lived in Vicksburg for 33 years. He retired after 37 years as a civil engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the Lower Mississippi Valley District.

Mr. Carpenter was a Marine Corps veteran and served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the VFW and a member, deacon, Sunday school teacher and director at Bowmar Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jewel W. and Virginia Mitchell Carpenter.

Survivors include his wife, Mary James Carpenter of Vicksburg; a son, Tommy Carpenter of Vicksburg; two daughters, Martha Skinner of Atlanta, Ga., and Marilyn Lee of Biloxi; a sister, Martha Gibson of Bristol, Tenn.; and four grandchildren.

Johnnie Eastman

Services for Johnnie Eastman will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Mount Givens Baptist Church. Burial will be at Mount Givens Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 until 5 p.m. today at Williams Funeral Service.

Mr. Eastman died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at his home. He was 56.

Mr. Eastman was a lifelong resident of Vicksburg.

Survivors include a daughter, Kawanakee Eastman of Cleveland, Ohio; three sisters, Sarah Cosey and Julia Cosey, both of Vicksburg, and Catherine Robertson of Detroit; and two brothers, Robert Eastman Jr. and Williams Eastman, both of Vicksburg.

James Ancel Kitchen Sr.

FERRIDAY, La. n James “Jimmy” Ancel Kitchen Sr. died Saturday, March 22, 2003, in Vicksburg. He was 89.

Mr. Kitchen was born in Edgar Springs, Mo. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was the Tensas Parish clerk of court for 44 years. He was a trustee of the Louisiana Clerks of Court Association. He was a member of St. Joseph Tensas Masonic Lodge No. 309, El Karubah Shriners in Monroe and the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, his parents, James Edward and Nancy Evans Kitchen; three sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include two sons, James A. Kitchen Jr. of Baton Rouge and John C. Kitchen of St. Joseph; four grandchildren, two nieces and two nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Comer Funeral Home Chapel in Ferriday with the Rev. Dr. Robert Cooper officiating. Burial will follow at Legion Memorial Cemetery in Newellton.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 1 p.m. Monday until the time of service.

Pallbearers will be James A. Kitchen III, John Charles Kitchen, William Daniel Kitchen, Leroy McDaniel, Allen Perritt and Jerome K. Post Jr.

Joseph H. Scott

Joseph H. Scott died Friday, March, 21, 2003, at the G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery Medical Center in Jackson. He was 54.

Mr. Scott was a 1966 graduate of Rosa A. Temple High School and a 1970 graduate of Alcorn State University. He served in the Army in Vietnam and was a member of First Spring Hill M. B. Church, where he was a deacon. He was a member of Tyner-Ford Post No. 213, St. Paul Lodge No. 112 AF&AM, Fidelity Lodge No. 507 and Eta Tau Chapter Omega Psi Phi.

Mr. Scott was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. Governor Burns and Willie B. Scott Burns.

Survivors include his wife, Alice W. Scott of Vicksburg; two sons, Christopher Scott of Vicksburg and Dietrich Washington of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Andrea R. Eatmon of Hohenfels, Germany, and Rosalind Scott of Vicksburg; six grandchildren; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
