[3/30/03]It didn’t take long for Vicksburg High to return to its winning ways.

One day after having a six-game winning streak snapped, Vicksburg erupted for 12 hits and 15 runs in a 15-3 win over Richland on Saturday.

Steven Price led the way for the 15th-ranked Gators, going 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI while keeping Richland (4-15) in check on the mound. Price didn’t allow any earned runs, walked only one, and struck out five.

Justin Henry went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Vicksburg (11-6), Justin Boler tripled and scored two runs, and Sean McGowan and Ben Shelton each drove in two runs. Josh McBride, Rob Quimby, Wesley Miller, and Patrick Grey also had RBI singles for VHS.

Richland took a brief lead in the second inning, scoring three unearned runs after a potential inning-ending double play ball was booted. One run scored on the error, and Lance Brunt followed with a two-run double to give the Rangers a 3-2 lead.

“We’ve been no-hit the last two ballgames, and tonight we put five hits together so I was pleased with that,” Richland coach Trey Lindsey said.

Vicksburg answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring seven runs on seven hits. The Gators sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning and opened a 9-3 lead.

McBride, Price, and Quimby each had RBI singles during the rally, and Shelton drove in two runs with a single. Boler tripled and scored a run on Price’s second hit of the inning to cap the outburst.

Vicksburg added a run in the third on Henry’s RBI single, then finished the job in the bottom of the fourth with five more runs.

McGowan singled to knock in two runs, then Miller and Grey followed with RBI singles to make it 15-3. After Grey’s single, the game was called by the 12-run mercy rule.

“I think the biggest thing was it was a little off-speed compared to what we’ve been seeing here lately, and I think we made a good adjustment the second time around,” Vicksburg coach Jamie Creel said.
