Lane leaving Lady Vikes

[4/10/03]Holly Lane has plenty of plans for the next soccer season at Warren Central. Every time she thinks of a new drill, scheme, or alignment, though, she catches herself.
“In my mind, I’m thinking of next year, but then I realize I’m not going to be here,” Lane said.
Lane, who has coached the Lady Vikes for the past four seasons, is stepping down at the end of the school year and moving to Colorado, where her husband has taken a job. She said she would pursue a teaching and coaching job there.
Lane compiled a 36-30-6 record at WC, and guided the Lady Vikes to a division championship in her first season in 2000.
The division championship was the Lady Vikes’ only playoff appearance under Lane, but WC was in one of the toughest divisions in the state.
In each of the last three seasons, a team from the division either Vicksburg or Clinton has played for a state championship. Vicksburg won twice, in 2001 and 2002, and Clinton lost to Tupelo in the Class 5A title game this year.
“I’m going to miss it here. Especially since I’ve been working with the same group of girls for a while,” Lane said.
“I can see the younger ones coming along.”
The younger players weren’t the only ones learning, Lane said. She also coached WC’s cross country team, and said time management during the early part of soccer season when the two sports overlap was difficult at first.
“I’ve learned a lot. It’s hard to leave now because I learned a little each year,” Lane said. “The last couple of years, I finally got things to where I could manage my time, manage both teams, and now it’s time for me to go.”
Lane will stay at Warren Central until the end of the school year. Vicksburg Warren athletic director Lum Wright Jr. said the search for a new girls soccer coach would begin next month.
“We’re just trying to find a person that has knowledge of soccer. Those soccer people are hard to find, people that have played and can coach it,” Wright said.
