[4/4/03]St. Aloysius never figured out Mize pitcher Leanne Sullivan Thursday night, and lost a 1-0 nail-biter to division-rival Mize.
Layne Travis singled in the fourth inning for Mize, then moved to second on a hit batter, stole third and scored on a passed ball for the only run of the game.
Laura Beth Lyons pitched a complete game and took the loss for the Lady Flashes (10-2), who are now tied in the division with Mize.
The Lady Flashes beat the Lady Bulldogs in their first meeting by three runs, meaning that St. Al would win a playoff tiebreaker if it came to that.
St. Al had several chances to score, but struggled to string hits together against Sullivan.
Catherine Jenkins’ fifth-inning single broke up a no-hitter and the Lady Flashes only had two hits in the game.
St. Al’s best chance came in the third inning when Lyons reached on a fielder’s choice and Sarah Kerut reached on an error. Both stole bases putting runners on second and third with two outs. Sullivan coaxed a groundout by Candice Park to end the threat, however.
After Jenkins led off the fifth with a single, Sullivan retired the next three batters to end the threat.
