WC’s boys, VHS’ girls win division track titles

[4/16/03]Warren Central’s boys and Vicksburg High’s girls claimed Division 4-5A track and field championships Tuesday at Vicksburg Memorial Stadium.
Vicksburg’s boys and Warren Central’s girls each finished second in the four-team division meet.
The Vikings scored 102 points and the Gators registered 88 points, while Clinton and Forest Hill lagged well behind.
Vicksburg’s Maurice Taylor scored a pair of first-place finishes in the 100- and 200-yard dash, edging Warren Central’s Fred Payne in both events.
Warren Central’s Antonio Brown won first in the 110-yard high hurdles, teammate Terry Cole took first in the 400-yard dash, and Peter Scott took first in the 3,200. Scott’s teammate, Robert Hetzel, finished second in the 3,200.
In addition to Taylor’s wins, Vicksburg got first-place finishes from Ernest Linson in the 300 intermediate hurdles, and James Woods in both the 1,600 and 3,200 as either Vicksburg or Warren Central runners took the top spot in every running event.
In the field events, Warren Central’s Deonta Selvy, who won the state powerlifting title on Friday as a super heavyweight, cruised to the shot put title. His throw was more than two feet farther than second-place finisher Casey Younger of Vicksburg.
Payne took first in the triple jump, while Robert Warner edged WC teammate Larry Warner for the long jump title. Taylor won the high jump for VHS.
In the relays, Vicksburg won both the 4×100 and 4×200.
On the girls’ side, the Missy Gators scored 109 points to beat WC by 29.
Erica Woodson took first place in the 100, nipping teammate Kendra Sims by .06 seconds. Sims, though, took first in the 200. Tiffany Hubbard won the 400.
Jessica Morris of Vicksburg captured the 1,600 title, and she finished second in the 3,200. Clinton’s Judy Mitchell won the 3,200, the only winner not either on WC or Vicksburg.
Warren Central got first-place finishes from Trekia Jones in the 100 high hurdles and 300 low hurdles, and Talisha Butler in the 800 run.
In the field events, Vicksburg got first-place finishes from Katrina Sanders in the shot put, Jazmin Johnson in the long jump, and Hubbard in the high jump.
WC’s Ebon Williams took first in the discus and teammate Amanda Doyle took first in the triple jump.
WC’s relay team won the 4×100, while Vicksburg took both the 4×200 and 4×400 titles.
