Gators advance to state golf tournament

[5/1/03]Bill Hassell shot a 74 to tie for second place at the regional golf tournament Wednesday in Madison, helping Vicksburg High finish fourth in the team standings and advance to next week’s state tournament.

Madison Central won the regional by shooting 300 as a team. Northwest Rankin was second, with a 316, followed by Clinton with 319, Vicksburg with 336, and Warren Central with 370.

Austin Frye of Madison Central shot a 68 on the Lake Caroline course to take medalist honors. Hassell tied with Northwest Rankin’s Clay Masselle for second, but was the only Gator to break 80.

“Every one of our guys walked out saying they could do better. It was good to qualify for state, though,” Vicksburg coach Mike Coleman said.

The Class 5A state tournament will be Monday at Lake Caroline.
