[5/6/03]While some students in public schools are readying for summer vacation, others will attend an additional four to six weeks of school after classes end May 23.

The Vicksburg Warren School District board of trustees on Wednesday approved raising the cost of tuition for out-of-state students and out-of-district students. The board considers out-of-district students to be those who do not live in Warren County. In other words, students who live in Warren County but attend a private or parochial school are considered to be inside the district and will be charged the normal cost of tuition.

The cost for a high school course is $200 and $120 for an elementary course. Junior high courses are $65.

For the first time, however, students who do not live in Warren County, but live in the state, will pay an additional $50 per class.

Out-of-state students will pay an additional $300.

“These people do not contribute anything in the way of tax money to this district or to this state,” Superintendent Donald Oakes said.

The summer school session for elementary school and junior high students is four weeks, and the high school session is six weeks. The sessions begin June 2.

Classes will be at Vicksburg High School for those in ninth through 12th grades, at Vicksburg Junior High School for seventh- and eighth-graders and at Beechwood Elementary School for kindergarten through sixth-graders.

Oakes said parents will be contacted by the school or teachers in the last week of school if a child is required to attend summer school. But, he added, some parents are already aware if children will be required to attend the summer school.

“They should know from the report cards they’ve been getting all year,” Oakes said.

Other summer programs offered are free voluntary enrichment and tutorial programs.

Some of the programs include the 21st Century tutorial program to be at the Kings Community Center and Grove Street Elementary. Another is the Reading Excellence program at Beechwood Elementary School, which is only for students at the school wanting additional help with reading skills. And lastly, an extended school year for special education students in the district will be at Beechwood.

In other matters, the board:
