[5/8/03]A longtime city employee accused of embezzling a city welding machine he reported stolen has been indicted by the Warren County grand jury.
Lawrence Ernest Krueger, 67, 3229 Drummond St., faces a charge of conspiracy to commit a felony. The indictment against him was one of 36 made public Wednesday against 33 defendants.
Krueger, a City of Vicksburg employee of more than 25 years, was fired March 10 after being accused of embezzlement and filing a false police report. He had reportedly said a welding machine valued at $2,700 was stolen from the city’s maintenance shop. The indictment alleges he knew where it was at the time.
In all, the panel that met Monday through Wednesday considered 56 cases involving 64 defendants, returning indictments in 53 cases against 61 defendants, it said in its report.
For a grand jury to return an indictment in a case, at least 12 of 18 grand jurors must vote that there is enough evidence for it to go to trial.
Indictments returned this week and made public Wednesday against other defendants, with charges, were:
Shunta S. Burks, 24, 3470 N. Washington St., sale of marijuana and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
