AN ANNIVERSARY VISIT

Published 12:00 am Monday, May 19, 2003

Brian Tull of Benton, Ark., above, looks at cannon lining the Battery De Golyer site at the Vicksburg National Military Park Sunday. The day marked the 140th anniversary of the first day of the Siege of Vicksburg. The battle at Battery De Golyer, in which soldiers from the 8th Michigan Artillery commanded by Samuel De Golyer hammered the Confederate Great Redoubt, lasted from May 25 until the end of the siege, July 4. De Golyer was killed. Tull said he is a “big Civil War buff” and stopped at the park after visiting Fort Jackson in New Orleans. (Melanie Duncan ThortisThe Vicksburg Post)
