Doris Marie Dee Carson

PORT GIBSON Doris Marie Dee Carson died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at her home in Jackson, Mich. She was 59.

Mrs. Carson was the daughter of the late Martha Alice Dee-Williams and John Knight. She was a member of Mercy Seat M.B. Church in Port Gibson and Southside Baptist Church in Jackson.

She attended Claiborne County Schools and Alcorn A&M College, where she received a degree in elementary education. She received a master’s of science degree from Michigan State University and worked as a teacher in Mississippi and Michigan.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Leonard C. Dee; and her stepfather, Solomon J. Williams.

Survivors include her grandmother, Mary Ella Dee of Port Gibson; three sisters, Darleen Williams and Mosie L. Piazza, both of Port Gibson, and Lillie King of Compton, Calif.; two brothers, Oliver W. Williams and Cardell Williams, both of Port Gibson; and nieces, nephews, aunts, other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mercy Seat M.B. Church with the Rev. Frank McGriggs officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 until 6 p.m. Friday at Thompson Funeral Home Inc. in Port Gibson and from noon Saturday until the service at the church.

Johnnie L. Clayton

Services for Johnnie L. Clayton will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home with the Rev. Joseph Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 until 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Clayton died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. He was 79.

Born in Meridian, Mr. Clayton was a resident of Vicksburg and retired from Anderson-Tully Lumber Mill Company.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Mae Pigford-Hall and Jessie James Clayton; a son, Alfred Lee Daniel Sr.; and a sister, Deloris Hall.

Survivors include his wife, Artimese Hebron Daniel Clayton of Vicksburg; three sons, John H. Daniel and Willie J. Daniel Sr., both of Vicksburg, and Eddie Daniel Jr. of Chicago; a brother, Charlie Hall III of Meridian; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Frances Angela Costello

OAK GROVE Frances Angela Costello died Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at St. Frances Medical Center in Monroe, La. She was 89.

Mrs. Costello was a resident of Oak Grove.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carmon E. Costello; a son, Dan Richard Costello; her parents, John Janes and Angela Janes; and three brothers, Joe Janes, Johnny Janes and Tony Janes.

Survivors include two daughters, Chris Van Linden of Wyoming, Mich., and Dot Schaefer of Oak Grove; two sons, John H. Costello of Oak Grove and Carmon Ray Costello of Kenner, La.; a brother, Frank P. Janes of Oak Grove; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oak Grove with the Revs. Mike Howard and Joe Martina officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery under the direction of Cox Funeral Home.

Mrs. Costello’s nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Philley, Lewis Chop and Kent Costello.

Ned Gotthelf

Services for Ned Gotthelf will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Anshe Chesed Cemetery with Ted Levi officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Riles Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Friday until the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Gotthelf died Monday, May 19, 2003, in Decatur, Ala. He was 82.

Born in Vicksburg, Mr. Gotthelf was a former Yazoo City resident and had lived in Decatur for the past five years. He had owned Yazoo Apparel Shop, then worked as a real estate broker. He was the son of Harold and Adele Klaus Gotthelf Sr.

Mr. Gotthelf graduated from Carr Central High School in 1938 and was a graduate of the University of Mississippi, where he was a member of the Hall of Fame. He was an officer in the Army Air Force in World War II.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Finch Gotthelf; and a brother, Harold Gotthelf Jr.

Survivors include a daughter, Dell Felts of Decatur; and a son, John Gotthelf of Bitburg, Germany.

Therman Harkins Jr.

Therman “Deany” Harkins Jr. died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at his home. He was 39.

A native of Yazoo City, Mr. Harkins lived most of his life in Vicksburg. He attended Gibson Memorial United Methodist and Berachah Baptist churches.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Marvin and Gladys Lungrin; and his paternal grandparents, Thomas and Sarah O’Bannon.

Survivors include his parents, John D. and Ruth L. O’Bannon of Vicksburg; a sister, Janean Harkins of Vicksburg; two brothers, Pete O’Bannon and David O’Bannon, both of Vicksburg; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Fisher Funeral Home with the Revs. Ed Hightower and Jim Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Short Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Yazoo City.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be George Solis, George McBride, Daniel Slayton, David Gayle, Jack Curtis, Raymond Johnson, Dan Hilmintoller, Marvin Anderson, Hilary Westbrook and Carl Warnock.

Honorary pallbearers will be Drs. Manu Patel, Lee Giffin, Richard Friedman, Sarah Broom, Dale Read, Philip Ley and Bob Nevels.
