Dr. Felix Marcel Brown

Services for Dr. Felix Marcel Brown will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel at Williams Funeral Service. Burial will follow at Brown Family Cemetery in Port Gibson.

Dr. Brown died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at his home in Dedham, Mass. He was 36.

A Vicksburg native, Dr. Brown lived in Jamaica Plain, Mass., for eight years before moving to Dedham a year ago. He graduated as co-valedictorian from Vicksburg High School, where he was president of the Student Council and Key Club and served as editor of the yearbook.

He received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Oklahoma and his doctor of medicine from Yale University. He served as student body president for the Health Sciences Center, Oklahoma City Campus, and was awarded the Letzeiser Award, the highest honor given to a graduating senior at the University of Oklahoma for scholarship and service.

He completed his residency in pathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard University’s primary teaching hospital, where he was hired as the first African-American to join the department. He specialized in cytology and served as chief of the endocrine pathology service. He was also appointed associate director of surgical pathology.

Dr. Brown was a former member of Mount Carmel M.B. Church in Vicksburg, serving as pianist and soloist in gospel choirs for a number of years.

He is survived by Thomas M. Landy of Dedham; his parents, Eunice “Charlie” and Estella M. Brown of Vicksburg; a brother, Charles E. Brown of Vicksburg; a sister, Vern V. Brown Covington of Naperville, Ill.; nieces and nephews; and aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Marjorie M. Carlson

Marjorie M. Carlson died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at Heritage House. She was 79.

A native and lifelong resident of Vicksburg, Mrs. Carlson was the daughter of the late Harry and Louise Angelo Meyer. She was a graduate of St. Frances Academy and a member of St. Paul Catholic Church. She retired from Waterways Experiment Station after 29 years of service.

Survivors include her husband, Mel Carson Sr. of Vicksburg; a daughter, Peggy Barfield of Greenville, S.C.; a son, Mel Carson Jr. of Vicksburg; four grandchildren, Bryan Barfield of Atlanta, Ga., Megan Barfield of Columbia, S.C., Beth Carlson of Vicksburg and Mat Carlson of Pascagoula, Miss.; and two great-grandchildren.

A Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Catholic Church with the Rev. Patrick Farrell officiating.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Fisher Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Robert Roosevelt Gilbert

HERMANVILLE Robert Roosevelt Gilbert died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Claiborne County Nursing Center. He was 92.

A resident of Hermanville, Mr. Gilbert was a member of Jones Chapel Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dora Gilbert; and his parents, Lenora and John Gilbert.

Survivors include nieces and nephews; cousins; and other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jones Chapel Church in Hermanville with the Rev. Johnnie Hughes officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home in Port Gibson.

Visitation will be from 1 until 6 tonight at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until the service Saturday at the church.

Delano Dennett Howard

DETROIT, Mich. Delano Dennett Howard died Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at Botsford General Hospital in Farmington, Mich. He was 35.

A resident of Detroit, Mich., Mr. Howard was a former employee of Filippis and a member of Second Corinthians Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Arthur Hicks; and a brother, Brian Patrick Howard.

Survivors include his mother, Jurline Hicks Howard of Detroit, Mich.; his father, Charles Howard of Vicksburg; two brothers, Adriam G. Hicks of Detroit and Dion Lewis of Port Gibson; a daughter, Elana L. Cash of Detroit, Mich.; his maternal grandmother, Roselean Hicks of Vicksburg; and other relatives, including Lurline and Marion Green and the Hicks, Sanders and Carter families of Vicksburg and the Washington family of St. Francisville, La.

Services will be Tuesday at Second Corinthians Baptist Church in Detroit under the direction of Harris Crematory.

Ethan A. Porter

PATTISON Ethan A. Porter died Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at his home in Pattison. He was 85.

Mr. Porter was a native and lifelong resident of Claiborne County. He received a bachelor of science degree in agriculture from Mississippi State University in 1939. He was a B-17 pilot for the Air Force in World War II where he flew 35 missions over Germany.

After the war, Mr. Porter returned to Mississippi to farm cattle and crops, and in 1966 served as president of the Mississippi Cattlemen’s Association. He was on the board of trustees of Hinds Community College and the Claiborne County School Board. He was on the board of directors of Mississippi Federated Cooperative Services, the Port Gibson Bank and the Claiborne County Farmer’s Co-op.

Survivors include his wife, Sally Porter of Pattison; a son, Chip Porter of Metairie, La.; six daughters, Judy P. Moore of Port Gibson, Jan P. McElroy of Collierville, Tenn., Anne P. Veazey of Flowood, Miss., Susan P. Howard of Mobile, Ala., Sally P. “Winkie” Holton of Jonesboro, La., and Patty Porter of Pattison; a sister, Cleo P. Burris of Jackson; 18 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Private services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Porter Cemetery under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home in Port Gibson.

Visitation will be from 5-7 tonight at New Christian Fellowship Church in Port Gibson.

Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
