Johnny Acree
OAK GROVE Johnny Acree died Monday, June 9, 2003, at North Monroe Hospital in Monroe, La. He was 75.
Born in Rayville, La., Mr. Acree lived in Oak Grove. He retired after 32 years in the military, having served in the Navy, the Army and the Air Force. He served in World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam and as a military police.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maude B. Acree; his parents, Egbert G. Acree and Mary Elizabeth Acree; two sisters, Abbie Archibald and Faye Clark; and a brother, Willie Frank Acree.
Survivors include three sisters, Katherine Moss of Oak Grove, Dorothy Shipe of Cabot, Ark., and Frances Smith of Eudora, Ark.; and a brother, Sonny Acree of Cabot.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Cox Funeral Home in Oak Grove with the Rev. Milton Pray officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 until 9 tonight at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Lavelle Brown, Lewis Russell, Gary Bennett, James Hunter, Allen Irby and Ronnie Pardon.
George C. Beard
LORMAN George C. “Mike” Beard died Monday, June 9, 2003, at St. Dominic Memorial Hospital in Jackson. He was 75.
Mr. Beard was a resident of Crosby for a number of years before returning to his native Lorman in 2001. He retired in 1978 from Southwest Electric Power Association after 25 years of service. He was a member of Lorman Masonic Lodge and Gloster Church of the Nazarene.
He is survived by his wife, Tracie S. Beard of Lorman; three sons, George Beard Jr. of Meadville, Raymond Tullar of Florida and Arnold Tullar of Beaumont, Texas; two daughters, Mary Hennington of Barlow and Diane Lynch of Vicksburg; one brother, DeWitt Beard of Port Gibson; one sister, Dorothy Hill of Port Gibson; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and other relatives, including Linda Sue Stuart of Red Lick.
Services were at 11 a.m. today at Glenwood Funeral Home in Port Gibson. Burial followed at Cane Ridge Cemetery in Lorman.
Pallbearers were Jimmy June, George Russum, Fred Stuart, Steve Stuart, Robert Ross and Mike Greer.
Hilliard C. Berry Sr.
Hilliard C. Berry Sr. died Monday, June 9, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. He was 80.
Mr. Berry was a retired letter carrier and vehicle operations manager for the U.S. Post Office. He was a veteran of the Army, serving in World War II.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where he was in the Men’s Club; American Legion Tyner-Ford Post No. 213 and the VFW.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James C. Berry Sr. and Blanche Berry Buck; his stepfather, Henry B. Buck; his wife, Ethel J. Berry; a son, Donald Lamar Berry; one brother, Henry McClinton; and a sister, Juanita Berry.
Survivors include two sons, Hilliard “Butch” Berry Jr. of Vicksburg and Jonathan Berry of Richmond, Va.; two daughters, Blanchette B. Adams of Vicksburg and Ethel E. “Bonnie” Berry James of Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, James Charles Berry Jr. of Los Angeles; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
James E. Clay Sr.
James E. Clay Sr. died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at Vicksburg Trace Haven. He was 86.
Mr. Clay was a retired truck driver for McGraw-Edison. He served in the Army and was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of King David M.B. Church No. 2, where he was former president of the Senior Choir.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Curtis Clay and Mary Robinson Clay; two brothers, Howard Clay and Exmond Clay; two sisters, Ruby Hoye and Margie Clay; and a daughter, Linda Kaye Clay.
Survivors include his wife, Willie Mae Clay of Vicksburg; two sons, Bernard H. Clay of Las Vegas and James Edward Clay Jr. of Midland, Texas; seven daughters, Westine Houston and Joyce Clay Joiner, both of Vicksburg, Cinderetha M. Clay and Brenda M. Hunter, both of Inglewood, Calif., and Jean P. Byrd, Shirley A. Lowe and Wanda L. Clay, all of San Diego; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
