[6/15/03]Andrew Embry didn’t get to complete his high school career with an all-star game appearance on Saturday, but he did get another nice going-away present.

The Porters Chapel Academy pitcher and first baseman was selected to the All-MPSA first team as a utility player by the organization’s coaches at a meeting Saturday in Jackson.

Embry was joined on the All-MPSA squad by teammate Ryan Hoben, who was picked as a second-team pitcher. Embry and Hoben combined for a 21-3 record this season and led PCA to its first Academy-A state championship.

Hoben was selected as the Vicksburg Post’s Co-Player of the Year after going 12-1 with a 0.92 ERA and 128 strikeouts in 83-1/3 innings. He threw a one-hit shutout in the deciding Game 3 of the state finals against Heidelberg, leading the Eagles to a 9-0 win.

The left-handed Embry was 9-2 with a 1.60 ERA and 103 strikeouts in 69-2/3 innings. He also led the team with 10 home runs, had 37 RBIs, nine doubles, and a .335 batting average.

Embry played in the MPSA Academy A-AA all-star game May 31 in Clinton, and was picked to play in the MPSA-MHSAA Baseball Classic an all-star game for the top public and private school players.

The public-private game was scheduled for Saturday at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson, but was rained out. It will not be rescheduled.

PCA coach Randy Wright and Vicksburg High shortstop Justin Henry were also selected to participate in the MPSA-MHSAA all-star game.
