[6/27/03]Two more principals have been assigned new duties as the Vicksburg Warren School District prepares for a new year with a new superintendent.

Charles “Bubba” Hanks, assistant principal at Warren Central High School, will take the reins at Vicksburg Intermediate, and Cedric Magee, assistant principal at Vicksburg Junior High, was hired as Redwood Elementary principal.

“They’re just good guys, and I think the school district made a wise choice in hiring them,” Superintendent Donald Oakes said at his last board meeting Thursday. Monday is officially his last day.

Administrative positions have been shifting in the wake of the retirements and the hiring of James Price, who has been an assistant superintendent, as Oakes’ successor.

“I’m pleased with the new principals that were hired for Redwood and Vicksburg Intermediate,” Price said. “I think they’ll be a tremendous asset to the community.”

Hanks will replace Norman Powell as Powell moves to become the administrator for fixed assets and attendance compliance. Magee moves into the spot formerly held by Butch Newman, who will be an administrative assistant to Price.

More job changes are expected before school starts Aug. 8, including replacements for the posts held by Magee and Hanks.

“The process will continue for seeking viable candidates and conducting interviews,” Price said. He added that in the next couple of weeks all of the administrative slots should be filled.

A week ago, board members voted to hire new principals at Dana Road and Warrenton elementary schools.

Formerly the assistant principal at Dana Road, Judy Monroe was hired as principal of the school and Memphian Mary Hodges was hired as principal at Warrenton Elementary.

In a closed session, board members voted to expel three students. Oakes declined to say why. Also in the session, board members granted two students school transfers within the district and rejected one request for a transfer. A fourth transfer request was put on hold.

In other matters, the board:

Approved applying for a $100,000 federal grant to prepare and update a Crisis Management Plan for the school district.

Accepted a bid of $4,045 from Cynthia Vanderberry for a hunting and fishing lease on 16th Section land.

Gave permission for Gail Kavanaugh, child nutrition director, to attend the American School Food Service Association National Conference in Nevada. At the conference, Kavanaugh will be awarded the Mississippi Outstanding Director of the Year award.

Approved other out-of-state travel requests.

Approved seeking bids for new public address systems for both high school football stadiums.

Approved a bus turn-around repair in the 17,000 block of Oak Ridge Road.

Accepted donations.
