Elsie Moodie Haley

COLUMBUS Elsie Moodie Haley died Thursday, June 26, 2003, at her home in Columbus. She was 91.

Mrs. Haley attended the University of Mississippi and later became a dance instructor and homemaker.

Mrs. Haley was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick McDonnell Haley Sr.; her parents, Frank Boyce and Margaret McGrath Moodie; and a grandson, Haley Randolph Ball.

She is survived by three daughters, Kay Haley Carr of Columbus, Margie Haley Ball of Vicksburg and Suzanne Haley Tannehill of Clyde, N.C.; one son, Fred Haley of Columbus; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

A private service was at her home. Burial will be later at Friendship Cemetery in Columbus.

Mattie Libbett-Thomas

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. Mattie Libbett-Thomas died Thursday, June 26, 2003, in Grand Rapids, Mich. She was 78.

Mrs. Libbett-Thomas was a resident of Chicago and formerly lived in Vicksburg and the Mississippi Delta.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Davy and Lucy Libbett; four brothers, Dave Libbett, Eddie Libbett, Willie Libbett and Mike Libbett; and one sister, Belzonia Libbett-Carter.

Survivors include her husband, Theodore Thomas of Chicago; two daughters, Arzeta Libbett of Chicago and Mattie L. Langford of Minneapolis, Minn.; two brothers, Louis Libby and Elijah Libbett of Chicago; two sisters, Alma L. Dolly and Melissa Libbett-Grice, both of Grand Rapids, Mich.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Brown-Hutchinson Ministries Church with the Brown Hutchinson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the hour of service.

R.E. Manning III

ROLLING FORK R.E. “Junior” Manning III died Saturday June 28, 2003, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. He was 56.

Mr. Manning was born in Crystal Springs and was a resident of Issaquena County for the past 34 years. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Manning was a deputy for the Issaquena County Sheriff’s Department. He was a member of the New Zion Baptist Church in Crystal Springs.

Mr. Manning was preceded in death by twin daughters, Regina Elizabeth Manning and Rebecca Elaine Manning; and his mother, Lillian H. Manning.

Survivors include his wife, Eloise H. Manning of Tallula, Miss.; his father, R.E. Manning Jr. of Tallula; a son, Richard Manning of Vicksburg; two sisters, Geneva Tompkins of Utica and Ruth Cagle of Caldonia; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the New Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Dewey Smith officiating. Burial will follow at New Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Monday at Glenwood Funeral Home in Rolling Fork.

Pallbearers will be Gene Ford Sr., Gene Ford Jr., Gene Fulton, Tim Perkins, Arthur Lawler and David Jones.

Honorary pallbearers will be O.J. Sharpe, Sonny Franklin, Calvin Young and Clyde Perkins.

Joe Howard Powell

PORT GIBSON Joe Howard Powell died Friday, June 27, 2003, at his home in Brookhaven. He was 58.

Mr. Powell owned Helping Hands Janitorial Services and was a youth pastor at Joel’s Place, an outreach ministry of New Christian Fellowship Church. He and his wife moved in 2001 to Brookhaven, where they became a part of Abundant Grace Ministries.

Mr. Powell was preceded in death by his parents, Denton and Hazel Powell and a niece.

He is survived by his wife, Lois “Jerri” Powell of Brookhaven; two daughters, Tammie P. Daigle of Barlow and Holley P. Rilko of Hattiesburg; one son, Joe Brent Powell of Covington, Ga.; one brother, James Denton Powell; three grandchildren; three nieces and four nephews.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Wintergreen Cemetery in Port Gibson. Burial will follow. Visitation will be from 4 until 6 p.m. today at Glenwood Funeral Home in Port Gibson.

Rev. Samuel L. Pruitt

The Rev. Samuel L. Pruitt died Saturday, June 28, 2003, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. He was 81.

Rev. Pruitt was a native of Peachtree, Texas, and lived in Leesville, La., for 32 years. He had lived in Vicksburg since 1997. Rev. Pruitt had started churches in Omstock, Germany, Leesville and New Lanao, La. He taught Sunday school classes at the Ault Men’s Class and other churches in the area. He was also a substitute preacher at Trinity Baptist Church. A World War II veteran, Rev. Pruitt worked as an electronic engineer for Civil Services for 30 years.

Rev. Pruitt was preceded in death by his wife, Lola M. Pruitt; and two brothers, Johnny Ray Pruitt and Blanchard Pruitt.

Survivors include a son, Danny Pruitt of Coushatta, La.; three daughters, Shelia Baker of Leavenworth, Kan., Sherry Pratt of Ridgeland and Sonya Stephens of Sulpher, La.; four brothers, Mark Pruitt and Gene Pruitt, both of Anacoco, La., Titus Pruitt of Florien, La., and Luke Pruitt of Jasper, Texas; one sister, Lois L. Manasco of Many, La.; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bayou Scie United Methodist Church in Zwolle, La., with the Rev. Frank Lescallette and Dr. John G. McCall officiating.

Visitation will be 5 until 7 p.m. Monday with a memorial service at 7 at Fisher Funeral Home and noon until the service at the church Wednesday.

Pallbearers will be Glenn Waters, Ken Baker, Jim Klein, Eddy Stevens, Bobby Pruitt, Joe Crow and Tommy Pearson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Scott Pruitt, Dale Pruitt, Jim Stevens and Wally Pratt.
