Barry Hassell runs away with another VCC Championship

[7/7/03]Barry Hassell is making the Vicksburg Country Club his own private playground.

The defending VCC Club Champion shot three straight rounds under par the first time that has happened in the history of the tournament to cruise to his fourth championship in five years on Sunday.

His three-day total of 204 was the lowest in club championship history. He shot rounds of 67, 68 and 69 for a 204 total, six-under par.

Bill Hassell, a former Vicksburg High standout and younger brother of Barry’s, finished second with a 216.

Defending Class 1A state champion Chase Smith, 14, shot back-to-back 71s to finish third at 218. Bubba Mims, who shot a 70 on Sunday, and Joe Lindigrin tied for fourth place with 219s.

Jake Dornbusch won the first flight with a 225, while Mike Caruthers took the second flight with a 239.

Bill Caldwell won the third flight with a 256.
