[7/1/03]Gail Kavanaugh graduated from college with a degree in institutional management and dietetics, but never saw herself being in education yet she’s just been named director of the year for her work heading the child nutrition department for the Vicksburg Warren School District.

“I was interested in foods and nutrition, but didn’t really plan to go into the education end of this,” said Kavanaugh, who directs meal services for the 9,200-student district.

Kavanaugh started in Jackson schools 22 years ago. She will be honored at the American School Food Service Association’s annual conference in Reno, Nev., July 20, as Mississippi Outstanding Director of the Year.

She was nominated by colleagues.

“I didn’t have any idea I had been submitted for the award,” she said. “It’s truly an honor.

“I couldn’t have been able to be awarded this without having such a great staff, great school district, a great school board and a great superintendent who gives you support.”

Kavanaugh served as a child nutrition supervisor for Jackson Public Schools for four years before taking the director’s position here 18 years ago.

She graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1976 and received her master’s degree in institution management in 1994.

She also serves as the public policy and legislation chairman for the Mississippi School Food Service Association.
