[7/18/03]Two Vicksburg men charged with murder were arraigned Thursday after being indicted by the grand jury meeting this week in Warren County Circuit Court.

They were among 12 defendants officially informed of their indictments by the grand jury’s presiding judge, Isadore Patrick. The grand jury was to hear evidence in 68 cases during their session, which began Monday.

Glenn Rene Johnson, 44, 317 Meadwovale Drive, is accused of using a 12-gauge shotgun to kill his housemate, Gregory Fonger, who was 44, on March 18.

And Alonzo Derell Blackmore, 24, 203 Smith Place, is accused of killing his girlfriend, Mary Shelly, who was 32, by shooting her with a 9-mm pistol. She was shot March 16 and died March 18.

The indictments mean at least 12 of 18 grand jurors voted that there was enough evidence in the cases for them to proceed to trial. Grand juries meet in private and consider only evidence presented by the state.

On Thursday the grand jury was to hear the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office present an investigation by the state highway patrol into the Oct. 26 fatal shooting of Jimmie Taylor II, who was 22, by Warren County Deputy Sheriff Lionel Johnson. The proceedings are not open to the public.

District Attorney Gil Martin, whose office helps organize the county’s grand juries, said late Thursday he did not know when a grand jury decision might be made public in that case. Recent Warren County grand juries, which meet four times a year, have typically sat for about four days.

Grand juries also meet with city and county elected officials, as they are also charged with assessing the state of law enforcement generally and may make recommendations on other matters of public interest.

The other 10 defendants arraigned Thursday, with charges for which they were indicted, were:

Stephen James Moore, 19, 1605 Shiloh Lane, larceny of a motor vehicle.

Torry Jerome Butler, 23, 210 Berryman Road, No. G51, two indictments, one for stalking and another for domestic violence third offense.

Jeremy Wayne Dobbs, 19, 2460 Old Highway 27, No. 6, burglary and grand larceny.

Carlos Mansha Gorham, 38, 278 Curry St., 13 counts of uttering a forgery.
