[8/1/03]The River City Renegades will find out today if they will be one of 32 teams going home from the American Fastpitch Association 18-and-under national tournament in Beaumont, Texas.
The Renegades, a Vicksburg-based select team, were set to play the Pony Express from Colorado today at 10:45. By 1 p.m., the field of 64 will be cut in half as pool play will end and tournament play will begin.
On Thursday, the Renegades defeated the Texas Panthers, 1-0.
Former Vicksburg High standout Kelsey Hudson belted a fourth-inning double, and scored on a throwing error for the lone run of the game.
Hollandale’s Mary Magaret Barnett and West Point’s Libby Denney combined to shut out the Panthers. Barnett got the win.
Madison Central sophomore Brittany Wright had two of the Renegades’ five hits.
The Panthers threatened twice, but both times defensive gems halted the opportunity.
In the bottom of the third, the Panthers put runners on second and third with two outs, but Hinds C.C. standout Lindsay McNair made a diving catch in center field to keep the game scoreless.
In the sixth, the Panthers loaded the bases, but Barnett was able to coax a lazy fly out and a strikeout to end the inning.
