James Adolph Bowers Sr.

James Adolph Bowers Sr. died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at Heritage House Nursing Home. He was 92.

A Warren County native, Mr. Bowers was the son of William and Minnie Wadford Bowers. He was a 1930 graduate of Culkin Academy. He worked for a number of years at Spencer Chemical Plant and retired in 1979 from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after 40 years.

He was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church, where he was deacon emeritus and Senior Life deacon and taught youth, young marrieds and senior adult men.

He was preceded in death by a son, James A. Bowers Jr., in 1987.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Lois Kleinman Bowers of Vicksburg; a daughter, Linda Bowers Vance of Vicksburg; two sons, William A. “Billy” Bowers and David L. Bowers, both of Vicksburg; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and other relatives, including W.F. Strickland of Vicksburg.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fisher Funeral Home with the Rev. Kent Campbell, pastor of Woodlawn Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Wednesday until the service at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Travis Wayne Vance Jr., James A. Bowers III, Clyde McKinney, William Scott Bowers, Randal Kincaid, J.B. Middleton, Phil Irwin and David White.

Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Woodlawn Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to Woodlawn Baptist Church, 2310 Culkin Road, Vicksburg, MS 39183.

Izora Caldwell Butler Coleman

Izora Caldwell “Madear” Butler Coleman died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. She was 77.

Mrs. Coleman was a member of Travelers Rest Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Tommie and Emma Caldwell; two sons, Eugene Thomas Gilmore and Prentiss Coleman; and her husbands, Archie Butler and Prentiss “Slick” Coleman.

Survivors include nine sons, Joseph Caldwell Connor, Herman Butler, Alex Jackson, Michael C. Butler, Prentiss Robert Coleman, Albert Earl Butler and David Wayne Butler, all of Vicksburg, and John Thomas Butler and Dannie Lee Butler, both of Corona, Calif.; a stepson, Donald Garrett of Vicksburg; four daughters, Willie Mae Butler Stevenson, Mary Coleman Brown and Carolyn Butler Barnes, all of Vicksburg, and Hattie Jones of Jacksonville, Fla.; 42 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives, including members of the Anderson, Butler, Coleman, Evans, Garrett, Handy, Knight, Lenoir, Turner, Slaughter, Smith, Taylor, Williams and Yancy families.
