[8/24/03]Hollandale-Simmons was looking for redemption.

Three of the last four years, Hollandale lost to Warren Central in the championship game of the Lady Vikes Invitational tournament.

This year, Hollandale (6-0) made sure the Lady Vikes wouldn’t get a chance as the Devilettes knocked off WC 9-0 in the tournament semifinals on Saturday. Hollandale continued its hot hitting, rolling over Vicksburg 15-5 in the championship game.

“This is the best we’ve played all year,” said Hollandale coach George Willis, fresh off a drenching of water and ice by his players. “We came in 4-0, but winning this tournament now gives us some incentive for the rest of the year.”

Vicksburg (1-6) scored three runs in the top of the first on two hits, a walk and a pair of Hollandale errors, but it was the last lead they would see all game.

Hollandale tied the game in the bottom half when starting pitcher Kelli Ouzts gave up two singles and walked in two runs before being replaced by Amy Harigill.

Harigill walked in one more run before ending the inning on a pair of strikeouts, tied 3-3.

Hollandale then doubled its score with another three runs in the second inning, helped by a pair of Missy Gator errors.

The miscues continued through the rest of the game as Vicksburg finished with seven errors, and Hollandale added nine runs over the final three innings.

“We gave away another ballgame,” Vicksburg coach Laquitta Smith said. “This is getting to be a broken record with this team.”

Latoya Morris hit four singles for the Devilettes and scored all four times. Ashley Redmond and Courtney Wilson also reached base four times, scoring three runs each.

Earlier in the tournament, Vicksburg picked up its first win of the season in an 8-1 victory over Yazoo County.

Ouzts led Vicksburg with three hits, and Harigill held Yazoo County to five hits and two walks.

“We started out kind of flat in that game and came back with our hitting, but we still committed too many errors,” Smith said. “Our bats are starting to come around, but the errors are killing us, especially in the outfield.”

Warren Central defeated Hazlehurst 10-1 led by Brittany Fuller and Lauren Anderson, who had two hits apiece.

The Lady Vikes had a moment of panic in the first inning when pitcher Keisha Blue fell down rounding third after driving in three runs and had to be taken to the hospital.

“She hurt her shoulder but she’s going to be fine,” Lady Vikes coach Lucy Young said. “We expect her to be back sometime early next week.”

Northwest Rankin comes to town on Tuesday to play Warren Central at 4 p.m. at Lady Vikes Field. The Lady Cougars will then bus over to Bazinsky Field to face Vicksburg at 7 p.m.
