Dr. Ludwell Pierce

Dr. Ludwell Pierce died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, at St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington, La. He was 90.

Born in Vicksburg, Dr. Pierce attended Vicksburg Public Schools and graduated as valedictorian from Chamberlain-Hunt Academy. He attended Marion Military Institute and received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Georgia, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and the Blue Keys. He was an officer in the military corps and was made a captain in the U.S. Army Reserves.

He taught zoology as an assistant at the University of Georgia. He attended the University of Michigan and Northwestern University in Chicago, receiving his doctor of dental science degree in 1942.

Dr. Pierce opened a practice in Jackson, operating there for 40 years before retiring. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he taught Sunday school and was a former Boy Scout Cub master. He was the oldest, active deacon and was a lifetime member and former officer of the Men’s Brotherhood class.

Dr. Pierce served on the board of the YMCA and was a member and officer of the Jackson Jaycees, Civitan Club and other organizations. He was a Gideon and assisted the University of Mississippi Dental Clinic and Friends of Alcoholics.

Survivors include his wife, Tessie Day Pierce; two daughters, Merrie Pierce Osborn of Vicksburg and Alice Peale Pierce of Covington; a son, Ludwell C. Pierce Jr. of Picayune; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Jackson with the Rev. Brister Ware officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Saturday until the service at the church.

Wilmuth Jo Russell

DELHI, La. Wilmuth Jo Russell died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, in Rayville, La. She was 73.

Mrs. Russell was born in Neshoba County and was a resident of Delhi, La.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Lamar Watkins and Theresa Bera Watkins; a son, Jimmy Lamar Russell; and a grandson, John Russell.

She is survived by her husband, the Rev. James Windell Russell of Delhi; one son, Mike Russell of Delhi; two brothers, Wendell Watkins of Philadelphia, Miss., and Binford Watkins of Ridgeland; two sisters, Edwina Webb of Philadelphia and Jelene Brown of Columbia, Miss.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Cox Funeral Home in Delhi with the Rev. Steve Hillman officiating. Burial will follow at Delhi Masonic Cemetery.

Mamie Weeks Varner

Mamie Weeks Varner died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, in Gulfport. She was 82.

A lifelong resident of Vicksburg, Mrs. Varner was the daughter of the late Henry and Carrie Byrd Weeks. She retired from Southern Bell Telephone Co. and was a member of Bovina Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, E.W. Varner.

She is survived by two daughters, Cecelia V. McCaffery and Caroline V. McCaffery, both of Gulfport; and seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Carl Barnes officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Fisher Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. Saturday until the service at the funeral home.

Grandsons will be pallbearers.

Louise Washburn

TALLULAH Louise Washburn died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, at Madison Parish Hospital. She was 93.

Mrs. Washburn was born in Natchez and had lived in Tallulah for 66 years. She was a secretary and homemaker and member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Tallulah.

She was preceded in death by her husband, M.W. Washburn.

She is survived by a son, James W. Washburn of Tallulah.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Echols officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Tallulah.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Karen Yvette Washington

ROLLING FORK Karen Yvette Washington died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, at University Medical Center in Jackson. She was 33.

Miss Washington was a Rolling Fork resident.

She is survived by her father, John H. Washington of Rolling Fork; two sons, Jeremy Washington and Calvin Savanah, both of Rolling Fork; one daughter, CharKaris Savanah of Rolling Fork; five brothers, Kevin Washington, Gregory Flood and Keith Flood, all of Rolling Fork, Rodney Ousley of Memphis and Jashawa Britton of Vicksburg; and two sisters, Lisa Collins of Nashville and Shawanda Flood of Rolling Fork.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Lula M.B. Church in Rolling Fork with Malachi Washington officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Rolling Fork.

Wake will be from 6 until 7 tonight at Walker Funeral Home in Rolling Fork.
