Herman Griffin carries away boxes of frozen turkeys that were handed out free this morning after an 18-wheeler carrying 53,000 pounds of the birds overturned on Interstate 20 West near the Indiana Avenue exit. At right, the driver, Craig Maple, 40, 277 Santa Fe Trail, Gary, Texas, talks with Vicksburg Fire Department Chief Keith Rogers, second from right, after the accident. Vicksburg Police Department Accident Investigator Leonce Young said the Jason’s Deli truck jackknifed while attempting to exit the interstate at about 5:30 a.m. He said the load shifted, causing the driver to lose control. Maple and a passenger, Andy Adams, 29, Joshua, Texas, said they received minor injuries, but they were not taken to the hospital, Young said. “The turkeys were given away to the people of Vicksburg and Warren County,” Young said.
