Mary Birdie McLemore

OAK GROVE Mary Birdie McLemore died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at Carroll Nursing Home in Oak Grove. She was 93.

Mrs. McLemore was a resident of Oak Grove.

She was preceded in death by her husband, A.B. “Doc” McLemore; and her parents, Charles David Fleming and Betty James Fleming.

Survivors include two sons, Charles A. McLemore of Oak Grove and Kenneth McLemore of Lake, Miss.; a brother, Luther Fleming of Warren, Ark.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services were at 11 a.m. today in the chapel at Cox Funeral Home in Oak Grove with the Rev. Jeff Sikes of Unity Baptist Church officiating. Burial followed at Red Wing Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Mike Kovac, Delton Ray Dartlon, Roy Wink, John L. Sanders, Phil Wilson and Tommy Jones.

Nels Jacob Nyman

Nels Jacob Nyman died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at Park Place Retirement Community in Houston, Texas. He was 89.

Mr. Nyman was born in Owen, Wis., and was reared in Wakefield, Mich. He was the son of the late Matt and Sanna Nyman. He graduated from Wakefield High School and Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.

A longtime resident of Vicksburg, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1935 until 1937. He was a scientific illustrator and cartographer at the U.S. Army Waterways Experiment Station, retiring in 1976 as chief of the Engineering Graphic Branch after 35 years of service.

Mr. Nyman served in the Army 373rd Engineering Regiment in Scotland, England, France and Germany during World War II. He was in the Army Reserve from 1946 until 1962, attaining the rank of captain. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Messiah.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Nyman, and three sisters, Elsie Meyer, Viola Mitchell and Betty Anne Nyman.

Survivors include his wife, Fannie Belle Nyman of Houston; two sons, Douglas J. Nyman of Houston and Carl M. Nyman of Texarkana, Texas; one sister, Ellen Kovacevich of Midland, Mich.; and four grandchildren.

Fisher Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

James Oscar Scott Sr.

NEW ORLEANS Services for James Oscar Scott Sr. will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the chapel at Killy Funeral Home, 2831 St. Claude Ave., New Orleans. Burial will follow.

Mr. Scott died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at his home in New Orleans. He was 80.

A native of Vicksburg, Mr. Scott served in the Army in World War II.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Evelyn W. Scott and Oscar Scott; three brothers, Eugene Scott, Robert J. Scott and George Scott; two sisters, Margaret Thomas and Evelyn F. Hopkins.

Survivors include his wife, Palma Cross Scott; two sons, James Scott Jr. and Linwood Scott; a daughter, Sandra Scott Brown, all of New Orleans; two brothers, Charles Scott Sr. and Eddie Scott, both of Vicksburg; a sister, Mamie Spellman of Vicksburg; grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Edward J. Tetlak

Edward J. “Ed” Tetlak died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at University Medical Center in Jackson. He was 85.

A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Mr. Tetlak had lived in Vicksburg for nine years. He was the son of the late Joseph and Viola Paluch Tetlak. He graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in accounting and received a law degree from Cleveland Marshall School of Law. He retired as a tax attorney for Standard Oil Co. in Ohio after 42 years of service.

Mr. Tetlak was a member of the Lions Club, the Knights of Columbus and St. Paul Catholic Church, where he served as a usher.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen K. Tetlak; and a brother.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Cook Tetlak of Vicksburg; two sons, Tom Tetlak of Medina, Ohio, and Leonard Tetlak of Garfield Height, Ohio; a daughter, Judith Tetlak of Middleburg Heights, Ohio, two stepsons, Norman Bragg of Daphne, Ala., and Paul Bragg of Houston, Texas; a stepdaughter, Janice Gray of Houston, Texas; 15 grandchildren; and other relatives and friends, including Ted Wojick.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul Catholic Church with Monsignor Joseph Koury officiating and on Saturday at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Middleburg Heights. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brookpark, Ohio.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 tonight at Fisher Funeral Home with rosary at 7:30.

Pallbearers will be Russell Gray, Brent Gray, Justin Bragg, Carl Cappaert, John Cesare and Joe Canizaro.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Vicksburg Lions Club and the Knights of Columbus of Vicksburg.
