Herbert Hall Martin

Herbert Hall Martin died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. He was 87.

Mr. Martin was born in Phoenix, Miss., and had lived in Redwood most of his life. He was retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was World War II veteran of the Army.

He is survived by a son, E.L. “Sonny” Martin of Natchez; a daughter, Kathleen Hackler of Edwards; a brother, J.C. Martin of Redwood; a sister, Hattie Stratton of Vicksburg; and five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Halls Cemetery with Michael Fields officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. Friday until the service at the funeral home.

Nels Jacob Nyman

Services for Nels Jacob Nyman will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Lutheran Church of the Messiah with the Rev. Gary Osburn officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 tonight at Fisher Funeral Home.

Mr. Nyman died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at Park Place Retirement Community in Houston, Texas. He was 89.

Mr. Nyman was born in Owen, Wis., and was reared in Wakefield, Mich. He was the son of the late Matt and Sanna Nyman. He graduated from Wakefield High School and Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Mich.

A longtime resident of Vicksburg, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1935 until 1937. He was a scientific illustrator and cartographer at the U.S. Army Waterways Experiment Station, retiring in 1976 as chief of the Engineering Graphics Branch after 35 years of service.

Mr. Nyman served in the Army 373rd Engineering Regiment in Scotland, England, France and Germany during World War II. He was in the Army Reserve from 1946 until 1962, when he retired as a captain. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Messiah.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Nyman; and three sisters, Elsie Meyer, Viola Mitchell and Betty Anne Nyman.

Survivors include his wife, Fannie Belle Nyman of Houston; two sons, Douglas J. Nyman of Houston and Carl M. Nyman of Texarkana, Texas; one sister, Ellen Kovacevich of Midland, Mich.; and four grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Carl T. Hudson, Eric Nyman, Joel Nyman, Chris Williams, Bill Park, John Harris, Tony Dardeau and Bob Murin.

Honorary pallbearers will be former co-workers at Waterways Experiment Station.

Willie T. Peters

PORT GIBSON Willie T. Peters died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, at his home in Port Gibson. He was 83.

Mr. Peters was a member of Central Church in Port Gibson. He retired as a heavy-equipment operator from the Corps of Engineers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Alice McChaplin Peters, and a brother, Virgil Peters.

Survivors include his wife, Rosie Pearl Peters of Port Gibson; two sons, Virgil Peters and Carlos Peters, both of Las Vegas; four daughters, Shenita Denise Gaines and Shannon Latrice Valentine, both of Port Gibson, Alice Mae Peters Mack of Gulfport and Tonya Maria Jackson of Las Vegas; and 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Williams Funeral Service of Port Gibson has charge of arrangements.

Rory Allen Roberson

Rory Allen Roberson died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, as the result of a motor vehicle accident. She was 52.

Born in Vicksburg, Mrs. Roberson was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier Academy and Hinds Community College. She was employed for 21 years with Ergon and was an asphalt analyst at the time of her death. She was a member of Eagle Lake Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her father, Albert R. Allen.

Mrs. Roberson is survived by her husband, Clyde Roberson of Eagle Lake; two sons, Drew Beard and Patrick Roberson, both of Eagle Lake; her mother, Gloria B. Allen of Vicksburg; a sister, Susan Coleman of Vicksburg; grandchildren; and other relatives, including Mary Roberson of Eagle Lake.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Riles Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Abbey, pastor of Eagle Lake Baptist Church, and the Rev. Darrell White, pastor of Wayside Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Rodney Walters, Don Rowland, Larry Copes, Buddy Lofton, Henry Wells and David “Elmo” McClurg.

Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Mayette, Donna McClurg, Anna Faye Keyes, Karen Harper, Diane Copes, Janice Carstafhnur, Linda Laird, Rusty and Judy Barnes, Ken and Josie Moody, Bump Callaway, Peggy Wright, Earl and Diane Wallace, and Jim and Patsy Stanford.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN.

Robert Lee Rockhill

Services for Robert Lee “Rock” Rockhill will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home with the Rev. Roosevelt Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Rockhill died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, at his home. He was 62.

Mr. Rockhill was of the Baptist faith. He retired from Bailey Lumber Co.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester Sr. and Lucille Champion Rockhill; a brother, Albert Rockhill; and four daughters, Gwendolyn Lee Williams Rockhill, Lucille Rockhill, Rosemary Rockhill and Addie Rockhill.

He is survived by his wife, Minnie Lee Brown Rockhill of Vicksburg; two daughters, Barbara “Jean” Williams Ross and Sharon “Shell” Williams, both of Vicksburg; three brothers, Sylvester Rockhill Jr. of Vicksburg, Gene Rockhill of Chicago and Sidney Rockhill of Atlanta; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
