Stringer bedevils Flashes with late score

[9/20/03]Drew Mazzanti ran for one touchdown and threw for another, but a long touchdown run with about four minutes to play in the fourth quarter gave Stringer a 28-27 victory over St. Aloysius on Friday.

Mazzanti had a one-yard touchdown run and threw a 5-yard TD pass to tight end David Weiland to help St. Al (1-3, 0-2 Region 4-1A) to a 14-14 halftime tie.

Anthony Rector’s 16-yard TD run put the Flashes ahead 27-21, but the Red Devils answered with a score to pull out their first win of the season.

Tall. Acad. 14, Deer Creek 10

Cade Marsh scored from 2 yards out with 58 seconds remaining to give Tallulah Academy a victory over conference rival Deer Creek.

William King had 19 tackles and Marsh rushed for 93 yards and the one touchdown on 18 carries as the Trojans (4-1, 1-1 Conference 5-A) rebounded from a loss to Porters Chapel last week.

Quarterback Preston Walker also threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Dukes.

Deer Creek’s Chris Welch ran for 90 yards, while Hunter McIntire kicked a 29-yard field goal and scored on a 7-yard run to put the Warriors ahead 10-7 with 6:58 to play in the game.

After an exchange of punts, Tallulah got the ball back at its own 40-yard line with 2:59 remaining and drove for the winning score.

SIA 27, Humphreys 9

Zach McDaniel ran for 227 yards and three touchdowns, on runs of 74, 54, and 6 yards, as Sharkey-Issaquena improved to 5-0 for the first time in more than a decade.

Chase Mahalitc had eight tackles, a sack, and a 2-yard touchdown run for SIA (5-0, 2-0 Conference 5-A).

Hazlehurst 44, Port Gibson 20

Erick Hall threw a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown passes for Port Gibson (1-3), but the Blue Waves fell to Hazlehurst (2-1) in their region opener.

Jerrell Moore caught two TD passes for Port Gibson, a 40-yarder from Jeremy Yates and a 35-yarder from Hall. DeIraton Turner caught the other TD pass from Hall, an 85-yard bomb in the fourth quarter.

Briarfield 51, Tensas 21

Briarfield built a 32-0 halftime lead and rolled to an easy win over Tensas Academy (0-5). Montellus Craft caught three passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns for Briarfield, and Blake Pierce had 64 yards and two TDs on only five carries.

The Rebels (4-1) also returned a pair of kickoffs for scores. Joseph Hopkins ran an onsides kick attempt back 50 yards to start the second half, and Craft had a 90-yard return in the fourth quarter.

Briarfield quarterback J.D. Kiefer threw a pair of TD passes, one to Craft and another to Drew Manning, and Manning later threw a 71-yard scoring strike to Craft. E.J. Holden also scored for Briarfield, on a 12-yard run in the first quarter.

Tensas’ Ryan Borsch caught a 45-yard TD pass from Tyler White and also returned a fumble 30 yards for a score. White also had a 1-yard TD run for the Chiefs.

Heidelberg 30, Hinds AHS 19

Brandon Harris ran for 105 yards and a touchdown, and Albert Williams added 94 yards and a score, but it wasn’t enough to push Hinds AHS (3-1) past Heidelberg (3-1).
