Porters Chapel ousted at state tournament

[9/25/03]Porters Chapel Academy (25-9) dropped a pair of games to No. 1 seeds for a double elimination from the Class A State Tournament.

Lauren Johnson struck out eight and allowed one hit in the opening-game win over North Sunflower Academy (19-5) a 9-0 shutout.

Annie Beaugh led the Eagles with three hits and two RBIs.

In the second game, PCA lost 3-0 to Winston Academy (22-4), the top seed in the North.

Winston scored all three runs on their only four hits of the game in the bottom of the sixth.

The Eagles then faced another top seed, the South No. 1 Franklin Academy, and lost 6-1 to end their season.

Beaugh finished 7-for-8 in the tournament and raised her average above .500 for the season.

“We got farther than I ever thought we would,” PCA coach Kevin Griffin said. “I never thought we’d make a state tournament.”
