[9/27/03]Kenny Simms scored on an 80-yard touchdown pass and a 90-yard kickoff return, but Porters Chapel Academy fell to Presbyterian Christian 21-19 on Friday.

Ryan Hoben threw for 206 yards and two touchdowns for PCA, one to Simms and a 60-yarder to Josh Gain, but missed two extra points and a field goal that could have been the difference.

After Simms returned the kickoff for a score midway through the fourth quarter to cut it to 21-19, the PCA defense forced Presbyterian Christian to punt. The Eagles (3-3) drove to the 26-yard line, but went for the first down rather than a long field goal and came up a yard short on fourth-and-5 with about 4 1/2 minutes to play.

PCA’s defense held Presbyterian Christian (5-1) again, but the offense was unable to move the ball.

“(Hoben) can hit it, but he has to hit it perfect,” PCA coach Bubba Mims said of the decision to go for the first down. “We felt like we had a good play to get five yards, and we got 4 1/2.”

The loss ended PCA’s two-game winning streak, but didn’t hurt the Eagles in the conference standings. PCA returns to conference play next week with a huge game against front-runner Briarfield.

“We win out on our district games, we can still win our district,” Mims said. “We get them next week, and we’re out front.”

Tallulah Academy 36, SIA 14

Cade Marsh scored four touchdowns, including two on punt returns, as Tallulah Academy (5-1, 2-1 Conference 5-A) handed Sharkey-Issaquena (5-1, 2-1) its first loss of the season.

Preston Walker completed 6 of 11 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown, and Brad Gustafson caught four passes for 79 yards and a score.

Chase Mahalitc scored on a 52-yard run for SIA, and Brett Stevens had a 44-yard TD run.

Briarfield 20, Humphreys 0

Drew Manning ran for 188 yards and two touchdowns to help keep Briarfield (5-1, 3-0) on top of the Conference 5-A standings. Humphreys fell to 1-5, and 0-3 in conference play.

Manning scored on runs of 77 and 22 yards, while Blake Pierce had a 39-yard TD run and totaled 83 yards on the ground on only eight carries.

Montellus Craft intercepted two passes for the Rebels, Jim Lensing had 17 tackles, and Kyle Love had 15 tackles and a sack.

Hinds AHS 40, Port Gibson 0

Albert Williams scored four touchdowns, two rushing and two receiving, to lead Hinds AHS (4-1) to a rout of Port Gibson. Austin Divinity rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns, and intercepted a pass on defense, while Chris Wright had 11 tackles and a fumble recovery for the War Dawgs, who forced six turnovers and held Port Gibson (1-4) to only 137 yards of total offense.

Carl Carson also had a fumble recovery and an interception for Hinds AHS, and Jason Grigsby had 10 tackles and a fumble recovery.

Rebul 36, Union 14

Adam Kitchens had 292 all-purpose yards, and returned an interception 92 yards for a touchdown as Rebul (5-2) routed Union. Cody Sullivan ran for 84 yards and a score and made 19 tackles for the Raiders, while Craig Flowers had 18 tackles.

Cody Phelps also scored for Rebul, on a 3-yard run, and Mike Shaw returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown. Rebul’s defense scored 20 of the team’s 36 points.
