Marguerite Lowry Boyd

Marguerite Lowry Boyd died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at her home. She was 90.

Born in Natchez, Mrs. Boyd was the daughter of Walter Adrian and Lona Dennis Lowry. She was a 1931 graduate of Natchez High School. She managed Vicksburg Water and Gas Department, retiring in 1973 after 30 years of service.

She was a former member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, bridge clubs and garden clubs. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace B. Boyd; a sister, Beryl Merrill; a brother, W.A. Lowry Jr.; and a niece, Barbara Ann Cooper Haley.

Survivors include a great-niece, Sharon Ferguson of Plano, Texas, and two great-nephews, Edward Patrick Haley of Sand Point, Idaho, and John Christopher Haley of Lake Dallas, Texas.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Riles Funeral Home with Dr. John G. McCall, pastor emeritus of First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Wednesday until the service at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Mike Jackson, Dr. Kurt Schrock, Charles Riles, David Hosemann, Jim Hess, Robert Ferguson, Pat Haley and Chris Haley.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bobby Bailess, Ellis Koury, Oren Bailess, Justin Peters, Luther Boyd, John D. Holland and Chad Poovey.

Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

Jeanette DuBois Lambert

FRANKLIN, Va. Jeanette DuBois Lambert died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, in Franklin, Va. She was 98.

Born in Detroit, Mrs. Lambert had lived in Richmond, Va., for 28 years before moving to Franklin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Karl Cyrus Lambert; a son, Richard D. Lambert Sr.; and her parents.

Survivors include a son, Robert L. Lambert Sr. of Williamsburg, Va.; a daughter, Joan Lambert Morgan of Vicksburg; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wright Funeral Home in Franklin. A private burial will follow.

Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Lambert Jr., Steven Lambert, Kay Lambert King, Robert Lambert Jr., Harold Morgan Jr., Marshall Morgan and Michelle Morgan-Brown.

Robert Nelson Leggett

Services for Robert Nelson Leggett were this morning at Crawford Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Geoffrey Joyner officiating. Burial followed at Green Acres Cemetery under the direction of Fisher Funeral Home.

Mr. Leggett died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. He was 90.

Mr. Leggett was born in Allen in Copiah County and had lived in Vicksburg since 1940.

After 34 years with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Waterways Experiment Station, he retired as chief of the construction and maintenance branch of the construction service division. He continued working at WES in model construction for 12 years following his retirement.

He was a member of Crawford Street United Methodist Church, having served as lay leader, church-school superintendent, secretary to the administrative board and secretary to the Methodist Men’s Club. He was also treasurer of the Greater Vicksburg Methodist Leadership Training School.

Mr. Leggett was a veteran of the Navy Reserve, serving as a petty officer in the Sea Bees.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Edith Bass Leggett; two sons, Robert N. Leggett Jr. of Great Falls, Va., and Richard B. Leggett of Vicksburg; two brothers, Dr. J.D. Leggett of Parker, Ariz., and Charles Leggett of Purvis; one sister, Robbie Lee Leggett Curry of Jackson; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were J.J. Coker, Tom Leggett, Rusty Hawkins, Mack Varner, Bob Morrison III and the Rev. Warren Coile.

W.K. Melton

ONWARD W.K. Melton died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, at River Region West. He was 91.

Mr. Melton was a native of Winnfield, La., and had lived most of his life in Sharkey County. He was a retired plantation manager.

He was a Mason, a member of Deer Creek Lodge No. 356 Scottish Rite, a Free Mason, a Shriner and the Order of the Eastern Star. He was a member of Cary Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirly McFate; a brother, Lyndly Melton; and two sisters, Charlotte McFarland and Mary Thompson.

He is survived by his wife, Fannie Riley Melton of Onward; one son, Denon Melton of Onward; one daughter, Diane Clements of Ridgeland; three sisters, Nancy Sledge of Metairie, La., Fannie Coleman of Olla, La., and Bobby Jean Tullas of Winnfield; a brother, Phillip Melton of Salem, S.D.; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Cary Baptist Church with the Revs. Reese Kyzar and Carl Barnes officiating. Burial with Masonic Rites will follow at Cary Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at Glenwood Funeral Home in Rolling Fork.

Pallbearers will be Sammy Bonds, Robert Brown, Rufus Barnett, Jesse Peay, George Quarm and Ellis Screws.

Honorary pallbearers will be William Moore, Burt Darden, Jack Wheeler, Frank Stuart, George Martin, Elton Branch, Walter Catledge, Frank Stuart Sr. and the Rev. Johnny Sanders.

Mary Elizabeth Presson

Services for Mary Elizabeth Presson will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fisher Funeral Home with the Rev. David Sterling officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Gary James, Keathon Anderson, James Cowe, Joshua Presson, Michael Presson and Cannon Presson.

Mrs. Presson died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at Shady Lawn Nursing Home. She was 83.

She was a native of Smyrna, Miss., and was a longtime resident of Vicksburg. She worked for years in sales at Valley Dry Goods and she owned and operated a private day care in her home for more than 25 years.

She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy.

Mrs. Presson was preceded in death by her parents, Seldon Matthew and Aletris Broome Hawkins.

She is survived by her husband, William T. “Bill” Presson Sr. of Vicksburg; two sons, William T. “Tommy” Presson and Mike Presson, both of Vicksburg; a daughter, Cathy Lowe of Vicksburg; a brother, John Terrell Hawkins of Jacksboro, Texas; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
