Fred Young Faulk

STARKVILLE Fred Young Faulk died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, in Starkville. He was 54.

Mr. Faulk was reared in Vicksburg and Jackson. He was a 1968 graduate of H.V. Cooper High School and a 1972 graduate of Belhaven College.

Mr. Faulk began a three-decade career as a photographer in 1972 as coordinator of Photographic Services at Mississippi State University in 1972. During his service in the Office of University Relations, his photos regularly appeared in student recruitment publications, the university’s Alumnus magazine, the student yearbook and, from 1997 until 2004, a university-designed calendar showcasing campus scenes. His news and feature photos have appeared in newspapers around state, nation and world.

Many of his scenes have been featured in two books about the university, a pictorial survey, published in 1993, and “Inside Dudy Noble A Celebration of MSU Baseball,” published in 1992. His last major project was a book of photos to commemorate the university’s 125th anniversary, “125 Years at Mississippi State University: A Pictorial History of the People’s University,” released in October.

Mr. Faulk received many awards for photographic excellence from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. He was among the first recipients of a universitywide Distinguished Staff Award, recognizing exceptional contributions to Mississippi State. He also owned and operated Fred Faulk Photography in Starkville.

He was a deacon at First Presbyterian Church in Starkville and was a member of the Starkville Tennis Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Johnson Jr. and Elizabeth Young Faulk of Vicksburg.

Survivors include his wife, Dianne Faulk of Starkville; two daughters, Leah Faulk of New Orleans and Emily Faulk of Charleston, S.C.; a sister, Jeneva Pickett of Vicksburg; a brother, Charles Faulk III of Jackson; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Starkville. Burial will follow at Memorial Gardens Park under the direction of Welch Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Charles Faulk III, Charles Faulk IV, Bob Pickett, Dr. Drew Pickett, Howard Pickett, Sam Tinkler III, Steve Tinkler and Bob Scott.

Honorary pallbearers will be the board of deacons at First Presbyterian Church of Starkville and members of the Starkville Tennis Association.

Annie L. Lum

Services for Annie L. Lum were scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Fisher Funeral Home with the Rev. Clyde Pullen officiating. Burial was to follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Lum died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. She was 84.

A native of Vicksburg, she was the daughter of the late Samual Francis and Alma Lou Pettway Raney. She had been employed with Brookly Field Air Base and the Im Fine Garment Factory for several years. She had served as a seamstress for many years before her retirement as office clerk for Lum Stock Yard. She also was a Warren County foster mother for many years and was a member of Ridgeway Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Lum was preceded in death by her sister, Sally Emfinger; and brothers, John B. Raney, William H. Raney, James Raney and Wilbur Raney.

She is survived by her husband, A.D. Lum of Vicksburg; two stepdaughters, Melissa Lyons and Alva Woods, both of Vicksburg; two brothers, Victor Raney of Texarkana, Ark., and Robert Earl Raney of Vicksburg; five grandchildren, Winston Lyons, Allen Lum Lyons, Cassidy L. Pickens, Quent Woods and Tiffany Lambert; and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Bobby Raney, Winston Lyons, Quent Woods, Brody Cook, Michael Miles and Allen Lyons.

Honorary pallbearers were Russell Barnes, Ricky Wood, Pete Stubbs, Sherwood Lyons, Cliff Borough, Dean Mitchell and Ryan Raney.

Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

Bobbie Speights

CARSON, Miss. Bobbie Speights died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg. She was 76.

A resident of Carson, Miss., Mrs. Speights was a former seamstress at Reliance in Columbia, Miss., Edward Hyman in Prentiss, Miss., and The Garment Factory in Bassfield. She also worked at Bill’s Dollar Store and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Willard Speights of Carson; two sons, Jerry Speights of Vicksburg and Kendall Speights of Carson; three sisters, Mary Nell Bass of Carson, Mildred Ford of Purvis and Marylyn Chance of Alabama; a brother, Benny Ray Dyess of Carson; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Saulters-Moore Funeral Home in Prentiss. Burial will follow at Green’s Creek Cemetery in Carson.

Visitation will be from 5:30 until 9 tonight at the funeral home.
