Sister Teresa Finnegan, center, directs Stella Gibson, dressed in a Sisters of Mercy habit, and Jefferson Moss with Dafford Murals, as muralist Robert Dafford photographs the scene Tuesday at City Front. The group was working on images Dafford will use to paint the city’s next mural on the floodwall on Levee Street. The Sisters of Mercy, an order of Catholic nuns with a presence in Vicksburg since before the Civil War, will pay the $15,000 for the mural. Sister Finnegan, who began her career as a student nurse at Mercy Hospital in 1948, became assistant administrator before the hospital was sold in 1990. The scene Dafford is photographing is of a member of the order tending to a Civil War soldier. Dafford and his crew will be working on two murals over the next month, the Mercy mural and one depicting fur traders approaching Fort Nogales at Vicksburg around 1790. On Saturday, Dafford will sign mural prints from the mural project at 3 p.m. at the Old Court House Museum. (Melanie Duncan ThortisThe Vicksburg Post)
