Edna Faye Whitaker Fondren

TALLULAH Edna Faye Whitaker Fondren died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. She was 69.

Born in Durant, Miss., Mrs. Fondren had lived in Tallulah for 15 years. She was a certified nurse’s aide and a member of the Church of Christ in Tallulah.

Survivors include a daughter, Doris Stevens of Hazlehurst; a brother, Roy Whitaker of Jasper, Texas; a granddaughter; a great-grandson; and two nieces.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home with Dr. Robert Hanvey officiating. Burial will follow at Silver Cross Cemetery in Tallulah.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight and from 10 a.m. until the service Friday at the funeral home.

Eylin Mabel Gaines

Services for Eylin Mabel Gaines will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Word of Faith Christian Center. Burial will follow at Mount Pilgrim M.B. Church Cemetery under the direction of Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 1 until 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until the service Saturday at the church.

Mrs. Gaines died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. She was 82.

Mrs. Gaines was a member and mother at Mount Pilgrim M.B. Church. She was a homemaker and member of the Order of Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bennie Gaines Sr.; a daughter, Doris Gaines Wilson; her mother, Henrietta Johnson; her father, Robert Green; one grandson, Jeffrey Michael Gaines; two granddaughters, Deleslin Rosberg and Libby Kay Jenkins; six brothers; and six sisters.

Survivors include three sons, Bennie Gaines Jr., Malcolm Gaines and Harold W. Gaines Sr., all of Vicksburg; five daughters, Gloria Gaines Hodge, Janice Gaines Jenkins and Eileen Gaines, all of Vicksburg, Deloris Gaines McGee of San Francisco and Marva Gaines of Daly City, Calif.; two brothers, Charles Green of Vicksburg and Melvin Green of Vallejo, Calif.; three sisters, Bernice Burkhalter and Bobbie Lee Lloyd, both of Chicago, and Lillie Simpson of Vicksburg; 29 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives, including Joseph Burns of Vicksburg, the Ford family of Denver and members of the Smith, Slater, Williams and Irwin families of Vicksburg.

Lillie Mae Garrett Kent

Services for Lillie Mae “Skezick” Garrett Kent will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Glen A. Hemphill officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Pilgrim M.B. Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon until 7 p.m. Friday and from 1 p.m. until the service Saturday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Kent died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. She was 68.

A 1954 graduate of Bowman High School, she was retired from Shady Lawn Nursing Home and Merchants Bank to be a homemaker. She was a member of St. Mary M.B. Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Kent Jr.; her mother, Lillie Mae Garrett; two brothers, Howard Garrett and George Garrett; and a grandson, Christopher Coleman Lindsey.

She is survived by three sons, Danny L. Kent, Tracy Garrett Kent and Robert J. Kent, all of Vicksburg; one daughter, Carolyn “C.C.” Morton of Vicksburg; a brother, Preston Griffin Jr. of California; her father, Preston Griffin of Vicksburg; and other relatives and friends.

Oscar Mayfield

Services for Oscar Mayfield will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Givens M.B. Church with the Rev. Melvin Bolden officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Givens Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 tonight at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. Friday until the service at the church.

Mr. Mayfield died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. He was 78.

Mr. Mayfield was retired from Anderson-Tully Co. and was a member of Mount Givens M.B. Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Ross Mayfield, and h is parents, Woodson Mayfield and Josephine Anderson.

He is survived by four sons, Oscar Mayfield Jr. and Elmore Mayfield, both of Vicksburg, Joseph Mayfield of Byram and Johnny Mayfield of Stone Mountain, Ga.; three daughters, Dorothy M. Heard and Josie M. Hudson, both of Jackson, and Cariola M. Jones of Vicksburg; a brother, the Rev. Henry Mayfield Sr. of Vicksburg; two sisters, Louise MacDonald of Greenwood and Elizabeth Gee of Vicksburg; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
