Bessie Amos

Services for Bessie Amos will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Pilgrim M.B. Church in Freetown with the Rev. Joseph Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday at Robbins Funeral Home with wake from 7 until 8 p.m. and from 10 a.m. Saturday until the service at the church.

Mrs. Amos died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. She was 61.

A native of Vicksburg, Mrs. Amos was a homemaker and a member of Mount Pilgrim M.B. Church.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Matilda Sims; her father, Sam Spicer Jr.; her stepfather, Tommie Lee Sims; a brother, Larry Sims; and a grandson, Chancellor Hudson.

Survivors include her husband, James Amos Jr.; two sons, Jeffery Morrison and John Amos, both of Vicksburg; five daughters, Kathlon Grissom and Janie Horton, both of Jackson, and Sammie Perkins, Tammy Hudson and Kellie Morrison Amos, all of Vicksburg; six sisters, Deborah Sutton of Rochester, N.Y., Tomizena Glover of Tacoma, Wash., Judy Taylor and Barbara Wright, both of Chicago, and Susie Jones and Athena Reece, both of Grand Rapids, Mich.; four brothers, Lamar Sims of Chicago, Anthony Sims of Tacoma, Stanley Spicer of Richmond, Calif., and Michael Spicer of Grand Rapids; her stepmother, Jessie Spicer of Grand Rapids; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and other relatives.

Glenn Carraway

Glenn Carraway died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at his home. He was 75.

Mr. Carraway was born in Copiah County to the late Rufus and Roxie Carraway. He had lived in Vicksburg since 1948 and was a former employee of Miller’s Tire Mart Inc. He had been retired for 15 years.

He was a sergeant in the Army, serving in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2572.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Rex Carraway; two sisters, Ruth Carraway and Avis Carraway Strong; two sons, Stephen Glenn Carraway and Glenn Carraway Jr.; and a wife, Mary Evelyn Baker Carraway.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Krueger Carraway; four daughters, Marcy Carraway Purdom, Amy Elizabeth Carraway and Lisa Krueger Harris, all of Vicksburg, and Susan Krueger Boyd of Kiln; a stepdaughter, Karen Krueger Brown of Vicksburg; two sisters, Rachel Carraway Channell of Vicksburg and Sue Carraway Cohn of Crystal Springs; seven grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Darrell White officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Bluff Cemetery in Dentville in Copiah County.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home and from 9 a.m. Friday until the service.

Pallbearers will be Aaron Purdom, Michael Channell, Joshua Strong, Herbert Strong, Mark Harris and Craig Brown.

Honorary pallbearers will be Joe E. Channell Jr., Jimmy Gouras, Joe Kilburn, J.R. Tew, Ben Blansett, Robert Murphy, Buster Miller, Tom Embry, Roy Steed and Chris Gouras.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association or Sta-Home Hospice in Jackson.

Donnell Ellis

Services for Donnell Ellis will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Vicksburg City Auditorium, 901 Monroe St.

Visitation will be Friday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home and from 4 until 8 p.m. at Locust Grove M.B. Church, 472 Stenson Road, and from 10 a.m. Saturday until the service at the auditorium.

Mr. Ellis died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. He was 54.

A member of Locust Grove M.B. Church, Mr. Ellis served as chairman of the trustee board, president of the Senior Choir and Sunday school superintendent. He was a 1968 graduate of Rosa A. Temple High School, serving as class treasurer. He graduated from Jackson State University.

He was a 33rd-degree Mason, having served as worshipful master of Sunshine Lodge No. 99 AF&AM and worthy patron of Rainbow Chapter No. 51 O.E.S. and King Hiram Grand Lodge O.E.S. He retired from the Vicksburg Warren School District, having served as principal of Grove Street and Dana Road elementary schools.

Mr. Ellis was a member of the Moses Grand and Mount Nebo Royal Arch chapters, Buckley’s Grand Encampment, Knights Templar, Evergreen No. 3 Heroines of Jericho, Esquire Club, Letitia Street Reunion Committee, Jackson State Alumni Association, 33rd United Supreme Council and Calvary Baptist Church choir. He served as recorder for Arabian Grand Shrine Temple, St. John Consistory, Israel Shrine Temple and the Grand Captain General Council of Deliberation Valley of Mississippi. He was secretary of Star Templar No. 5 and Select 12 Social/Civic Club, ambassador for the Lady Knights Hagar Council, associate patron of Eureka Court No. 4 Daughters of Sphinx and board member of Habitat for Humanity.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Edith Ellis Johnson.

Survivors include two brothers, Jack Ellis Jr. of Indianola and Rufus Ellis of Vicksburg; a sister, Carrie Mae McWay of Gary, Ind.; nieces; nephews; cousins and other relatives, including members of the Grady, Johnson, Reed, Walker and Williams families of Vicksburg.

Peggy R. Goff

PORT GIBSON Peggy R. Goff died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at her home. She was 71.

A native of Red Lick, Miss., Miss Goff had been a resident of Port Gibson since 1963. She retired as a loan officer at Mississippi Southern Bank in Port Gibson after 25 years of service. She was a member of the Friendship in Port Gibson and the Obedient Servants Sunday school class at Port Gibson Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Richard Goff of Houston, Texas; a daughter, Joyce Goff of Port Gibson; a sister, Diane Wood of Port Gibson; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Glenwood Funeral Home in Port Gibson with the Rev. Toby Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow at Wintergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Burnice Trevilion, Robert Parman, Lynn Goff, Mike Goff, Don Wilson and Leon Dale.

Honorary pallbearers will be Malcolm Montgomery and R.L. Ritchey.
