George W. Hairston
George W. “Pete” Hairston died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. He was 71.
Born in Moorehead, Miss., Mr. Hairston was a resident of Vicksburg. He was retired from auctioneering and from U.S. Steel in Gary, Ind. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Wilson and Olie Elizabeth Hadaway Hairston; a daughter, Deborah Hairston Wilson; and a brother, Mitchell Hairston.
Survivors include a son, George Lindal Hairston of Holbart, Ind.; a daughter, Paula Hairston of Portage, Ind.; a sister, Mildred Baker of Vicksburg; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Greg Clemts officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. Tuesday until the service at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be David Jenn, Michael Wilson, Mark Dement, Will Thomason, Todd Wilson, Riley Presley, Ken Breland, R.B. Nixon and Vernon Martin.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jerome Pellegal, Kendal Buchan, Harry Cockrell, Jim Ladner, Joe Strahan and Elmer Nielsen.
Irene T. Pierce
ROLLING FORK Irene T. Pierce died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at Sharkey-Issaquena Hospital. She was 77.
Born in Hackett, Ark., Mrs. Pierce lived in Danville, Va., before moving to Rolling Fork in 1967. She had been employed at Chuck’s Dairy Bar for 28 years and was a member of Rolling Fork Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Julia Townsend; two brothers, Harvey Townsend and Eric Townsend; and two sisters, Eva Oliver and Lorena Canoy.
Survivors include her husband, Paul V. Pierce of Rolling Fork; two sons, L.A. Pierce and Michael Pierce, both of Rolling Fork; a brother, Kenneth Townsend of Fallon, Nev.; three sisters, Dorothy Henderson of Rolling Fork, LaVonne Fratella of Landers, Calif., and Jeanette Ogbin of Lawton, Okla.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rolling Fork Church of Christ with Eugene Stringer and the Rev. Carl Barnes officiating. Burial will follow at Mound Cemetery under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home in Rolling Fork.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Travis Pierce, Rodney Pierce, Cody Paul Pierce, Paul Allen Pierce, Greg Henderson and Bernard Major.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of Rolling Fork Church of Christ, men of Deer Creek Baptist Church and Dale Pierce and David Lee Brown.
Harmon Smith
TALLULAH Harmon “Hoss” Smith died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. He was 78.
Born in Jonesboro, La., Mr. Smith had lived in Madison Parish for 52 years. He retired from Chicago Mill & Lumber Co. and owned and operated Smith Grocery in Tallulah. He was an army veteran of World War II and a member of Parkview Baptist Church.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Carolyn Davis Smith of Tallulah; two sons, Gary W. Smith of St. Joseph and Michael Lynn Smith of Tallulah; a sister, Autie Mae Wells of Jonesboro; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Parkview Baptist Church with the Rev. Cletus Moak and Dr. Kelly Barnett officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home in Tallulah.
Pallbearers will be Bruce Wallace, Aaron Wallace, Brad Wallace, Lester Skelton, Steve Green and Herbert Wilkins.
Honorary pallbearers will be Don Randolph and John Bowlin.
Ouida King Ryan
YAZOO CITY Ouida King Ryan died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at St. Dominic Memorial Hospital in Jackson. She was 75.
A homemaker, Mrs. Ryan was born in Yazoo County and had lived in Yazoo City most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Eula House and James “Tom” King.
She was a member of Mount Olivet Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ryan, and a son, Danny Ryan.
Survivors include a sister, Sammie Busby of Bentonia, and three grandchildren.
Services were at 10 a.m. today at Mount Olivet Methodist Church with the Rev. Frank Grey officiating. Burial followed at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
