Vikings bombard Hattiesburg, Oak Grove

[2/22/04]Mark Different didn’t let a first-inning jam against Oak Grove faze him Saturday afternoon.

The Warren Central senior threw a complete game, scattered 10 hits and struck out six as the Vikings (2-0) stunned third-ranked Oak Grove, 6-5, in the first game of a doubleheader. WC pounded No. 7 Hattiesburg in the nightcap, 18-1.

“It was a good day at the ballpark,” Warren Central coach Randy Broome said.

Different also had two hits, including a home run, and drove in a pair of runs to help the cause. Josh Gordon had a single and a double, while Jake Turner belted a single, double and an RBI, and Ryan Grey went 2-for-2 with a home run. Nick Carson hit a double and scored two runs.

Trailing 4-3 in the seventh inning, Carson led off with a double and moved to third on Different’s infield single. Allen Carlisle hit a groundout that scored Carson and Turner doubled in the go-ahead run to give WC a 5-4 lead.

With one out and a man on first in the bottom of the seventh, Turner caught a line drive in rightfield and threw to first base for a game-ending double play.

In the second game, Warren Central put it away early.

Zach Balthrop tossed five innings and allowed only a fifth-inning run to earn the victory. He struck out seven and walked three.

Warren Central scored five runs in the second and fourth innings, then tacked on eight in the top of the fifth to end the game by way of the mercy rule.

Different went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the WC’s 13-hit attack.

Carlisle, John Rice Pettway, Carson, and Vaughn Mims each had two hits for the Vikings, and Gordon had a two-RBI single.
