The Vicksburg Post prints obituaries for residents, former residents and residents’ immediate family members who resided elsewhere when notified by a family member or a funeral home. There is no charge for printing an obituary, but all are edited to meet the newspaper’s requirements.
Ruby L. Gunie
Ruby L. Gunie died Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at Shady Lawn Nursing Home. She was 81.
A lifelong resident of Vicksburg, Mrs. Gunie had worked as a waitress and was a member of Glorious Church of Praise.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Sammy and Sarah Moore; three sisters; and five brothers.
Robbins Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Yvonne Somerville Johnson
EDWARDS Yvonne Somerville Johnson died Monday, March 22, 2004, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. She was 65.
A native of Rolling Fork, Mrs. Johnson had lived in Edwards for most of her life. She was a 1956 graduate of Carr Central High School, a member of Calvary Baptist Church and a retired bookkeeper for Contractor’s Lumber Co. in Vicksburg.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Thelma Adele Somerville; and a sister, Charlotte Ann Ashley.
Survivors include her husband, Larry Don Johnson of Edwards; three daughters, De5borah L. Johnson of Daphne, Ala., Donna Meadows of Jackson and Vonda Kay Johnson of Edwards; two brothers, Randy Somerville of Vicksburg and Charles Somerville of Pearl; a sister, Dot Andrews of Vicksburg; and three grandchildren, Courtney Logan Boone, Erin Danielle Oldenburg and Alexandria Adele Oldenburg.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Revs. Carl Barnes, Dwight Sibley and James Hakim officiating. Burial will follow at Bethesda Presbyterian Cemetery in Hinds County.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Robert Smothers, Roy Ashley, Roger Ashley, Calvin Ashley Jr., Scott Ashley, Jonathan Somerville and Jonathon Johnson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jeffery Somerville, Jeremy Rushing, Jerry Rushing, M.J. Hubbard and Calvin Ashley Sr.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Vicksburg-Warren Humane Society.
