[3/31/04]St. Aloysius’ solid all-around play and a few key hits propelled it to a 5-1 win over St. Andrew’s at Bazinsky Field on Tuesday.

“They know right now that we can’t afford to lose another game,” Lady Flashes coach Gene Rogillio said. “And if we’re going to win, we’ve got to put the ball in play.”

Laura Beth Lyons pitched a complete game, giving up one run on five hits. She struck out 10 and walked just two.

The Lady Flashes were held to five hits, but they came at the right times.

“The hitting is coming around,” Rogillio said. “And hopefully we’ll just continue to get better.”

Stephanie Gwin’s groundout in the second inning scored Ashley Magee, who had singled earlier in the inning.

Sarah Kerut and Mary Myers Franco both singled in the third inning, and Gwin scored in the fourth after her single. Lyons had a double in the fourth.

The Lady Flashes also were helped out by their defense, which had only one error in the first inning.

That success has come, however, after a multitude of defensive changes during the season.

“You just have to find out what’s working for you and what’s not working for you,” Rogillio said. “You have to figure out who can handle what where.”

St. Andrews’ only run came in the fifth inning when Lindsay Graeber scored on Katherine Nicholas’ sacrifice fly.
