[4/7/04]When they weren’t swatting away the mosquitoes in their dugout, the Porters Chapel Academy Eagles took a few minutes to brush aside Briarfield on Tuesday night.

Michael Busby struck out nine in a one-hit shutout, and helped his own cause by going 2-for-2 with a pair of singles and three RBIs, as PCA (19-1, 12-0 Conference 5-A) steamrolled yet another opponent, 12-0.

Gerald Mims homered and drove in four runs, Ryan Hoben hit a two-run home run, and Michael Shinn knocked in two runs for PCA. It was the 18th time in 20 games this season that the Eagles have scored more than 10 runs and their sixth shutout.

The victory also gave the Eagles at least 19 wins for the fifth time in six seasons, and it was their 34th straight conference win a streak that spans three seasons. Dating back to the beginning of last season, PCA has won 48 of its last 52 games.

“That’s pretty strong. I had no idea that our numbers were there,” PCA coach Randy Wright said. “We’ve taken the program to where it needs to be.”

Tuesday’s game was scoreless until the bottom of the second, when Rob Quimby stroked a two-out double off the left field wall. Shinn followed with a walk, Chip Lofton dribbled an infield single down the third base line, and Mims drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in the game’s first run.

Busby then delivered a two-run single to make it 3-0 before the Rebels (1-12, 1-12) escaped the jam.

The reprieve only lasted an inning, though.

Humphrey Barlow led off the bottom of the third with a double, and Hoben followed with a two-run homer to left. Quimby, Shinn and Lofton each singled before Mims hit a towering three-run homer to right-center that landed on a small hill across the road that sits behind the fence. Mims’ shot made it 9-0.

“Our procedure all year has been to hang in there for two or three innings and have one bad one where we fall apart,” Briarfield coach Tim Stafford said. “We’ve got some young talent, and once we learn how to win I think we’ll be all right.”
