During the fifth inning of the Vikings’ 14-4 win over Murrah, pitcher Drew Warnock was run over by Murrah pitcher Nick Stewart and left the game with an injured shoulder.

His status for the final two home games tonight and Saturday is in question.

Warnock, who looked woozy after the impact, sat on the bench with ice on his shoulder the rest of the game.

“I did not see the play, and I am not going to point fingers,” WC coach Randy Broome said. “We got a kid hurt. It’s his throwing shoulder, and he has done a great job for us this year.”

Warnock was in the on-deck circle when Ryan Grey poked a two-RBI single. Warnock moved to near home plate to direct Josh Gordon coming around third base. Stewart ran in from the mound to back up home plate and in the process ran over Warnock.

“He’s our third pitcher and a go-to guy out of the bullpen, not to mention a darn good outfielder,” Broome said. “We’ll just have to wait and see.”

In the sam inning, after Stewart was moved to first base, Different hit a shot down the first base line, and as he rounded first, Stewart appeared to lower his shoulder and knock Different to the ground.

Murrah coach Scott Cheek immediately removed Stewart from the game.

The Vikings scored five runs in the fifth and ended the game with three in the sixth. Vaughn Mims’ two-RBI single ended the game because of the mercy rule.

“Errors get us every time,” said Cheek, who played baseball for Southern Miss in 1998-99. “It seems like when we get a pitcher out there doing a good job, our defense lets us down.”

Murrah kept it close, trailing only 6-4 heading into the fifth. Carlisle, the Vikings’ second hitter in the lineup, led off the fifth with home run down the left field line for a 7-4 lead.

Grey’s two-RBI single, and RBIs by Zach Balthrop and John Rice Pettway gave the Vikings an 11-4 lead.

Pettway led WC with three RBIs and a double, while Grey had two singles, and Different scored three runs.

Michael Johnson led Murrah with a two-RBI double in the top of the second. A Viking error, three singles and a double led to four Murrah runs as they erased an early 5-0 deficit.

“None of our pitchers is going to be dominant,” Broome said. “What they are going to do is throw it across the plate and make the other team put it in play.

“If we can’t make the plays behind them, we’ll be in trouble.”
