Johnnie Douglas Beard Jr.

TALLULAH Services for Johnnie Douglas Beard Jr. will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Frank Shields officiating. Burial will follow at Midway Cemetery near Delhi.

Visitation will be all day Saturday until the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Beard died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at his home. He was 59.

A resident of Tallulah, he was a diesel and farm mechanic and a member of the Royal Order of Moose.

Survivors include his wife, Danielle Matthews Beard of Tallulah; a son, Johnnie Douglas Beard III of Tallulah; two daughters, Amanda Sue Meadows of Vicksburg and Jeannie Bohn of Pennsylvania; his mother, Frances Beard of Vicksburg; three brothers, the Rev. Frank Shields of Downsville, La., and Elmer Sidney Preston and Delmer Bell Preston, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Johnnie D. Beard III, Kinney Heard, Jonathan Meadows, Nathaniel Matthews, Sam Whitaker and Johnnie Matthews.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ernie Sheppard and Buddy Heard.

Melvin M. Carlson Sr.

Melvin M. Carlson Sr. died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. He was 80.

A native of Bismarck, N.D., Mr. Carlson was a resident of Vicksburg and was the son of the late Leonard and Lela Nixson Carlson. He was an Army veteran and retired from Waterways Experiment Station after 33 years of service. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Meyer Carlson.

Survivors include a son, Melvin M. Carlson Jr. of Vicksburg; a daughter, Marjorie “Peggy” Barfield of Lawrenceville, Ga.; a sister, Marjorie Glenewinkle of Seattle, Wash.; a brother, Edward VanGohen of Scotland; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A Mass will be said at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Catholic Church with the Rev. Patrick Farrell, pastor, officiating. Fisher Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Glenda Sue Hogan

DELHI Glenda Sue Hogan died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, in Delhi. She was 59.

A longtime resident of Delhi, Mrs. Hogan was a former sales clerk and member of Newton Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her father, Carl Nash Hogan, and two brothers, John Hogan and Allen Hogan.

She is survived by one daughter, Kristi Michele Colvin of Rayville, La.; her mother, Bessie Mae Hogan of Delhi; a sister, Barbara Hutchinson of Delhi; and two grandchildren.

Services were at 10 a.m. today at Newton Baptist Church with the Revs. James Lee Busby, Terry Ganey and Eddy Shoemaker officiating. Burial followed at Newton Cemetery under the direction of Cox Funeral Home of Delhi.

Hubert Donnell McCain

LAKE PROVIDENCE Hubert Donnell McCain died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at Glenwood Medical Center in West Monroe. He was 67.

Born in Winnsboro, La., Mr. McCain graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a degree in accounting. He was a bookkeeper for Terrell Norris Feed and Seed Company in Lake Providence before working for International Harvestor Equipment Co. He had also raised cattle and farmed.

Mr. McCain was preceded in death by his father, Roy McCain; his paternal grandparents, William P. McCain and Mary Hightower McCain; and his maternal grandparents, James Owen Maynor and Laura Sheppard Maynor.

He is survived by his wife, Jessie G. McCain of Lake Providence; his mother, Auba McCain of Winnsboro; a stepson, Edward Keith Burgess of Monticello, La.; one sister, Bettie Ross of Alabaster, Ala.; two stepgrandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Cox Funeral Home in Delhi with the Revs. Donnie Linson and Roy C. Griggs officiating. Burial will follow at Ogden Cemetery under the direction of Cox Funeral Home of Delhi.

Pallbearers will be James Oscar Thornton III, Bill Hudson, Jack Godwin, Jerry McCain, Tommy Womble and David Harvey.

Honorary pallbearer will be Reynold Minsky.

Elizabeth Nash

Elizabeth “Liz” Nash died Thursday, April 29, 2004, at her home. She was 58.

A resident of Vicksburg, Miss Nash was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by a son, Harvey Nash; her father, Willie Nash Jr.; three brothers, Charlie Williams Jr., Lee James Williams and Leroy Williams; her maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Fuller; paternal grandfather, Willie Nash Sr.; and her stepfather, Charlie Williams Sr.

Survivors include her mother, Virgie Anderson Williams of Vicksburg; two brothers, Leon Williams and Darfeis Williams, both of Vicksburg; seven sisters, Clarone Pettis of Memphis, Elma Williams Coleman of Fredericksburg, Va., and Marietta Moore, Bertha Mixon, Virgia Hearron, Charlie Walker and Cheryle Williams Cooper, all of Vicksburg.

Private services will be under the direction of W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.
