R.J. Howell

R.J. Howell died Saturday, May 15, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. He was 83.

A native of Flora, Mr. Howell lived in Vicksburg for 50 years. He worked for the Warren County Highway Department for 10 years and for Magnolia Homes for 24 years.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army, and he was a member of Bentonia Pentecostal Church.

Mr. Howell was preceded in death by his parents, George Robert Howell and Martha Jane Myers Howell; one brother, Robert Leon Howell; and three sons, Ricky Howell, Billy Howell and Donnie Howell.

He is survived by his wife, Earline Howell of Vicksburg; two daughters, Nan Howell of Vicksburg and Kathy Cooper of Colorado City, Texas; four brothers, William George Howell of Bentonia, Malcom Howell and Alfred LeVone Howell, both of Jackson, and Melvin Leflora Howell of Brandon; and three sisters, Bonnie Kirk of Yazoo City, Jeannett Gettey of Flora and Lorice Clemens of Picayune; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Monday at Fisher Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie O’Quinn officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Monday until the time of the services at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Hugh Guest, Sonny Redditt, Bo Warren, Grady Howell, Jerry Hardy and Jack Pace.

George Samuel Jones

George Samuel “Sambo” Jones died Friday, May 14, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. He was 60.

A lifelong resident of Vicksburg, Mr. Jones graduated from H.V. Cooper High School.

He retired in 1995 as a supervisor with Cooper Lighting Company, where he had worked for 29 years. He was a member of Bovina United Methodist Church and a veteran of the Navy.

Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his parents, Sam Jones and Mary Katherine Delkerscamp Jones; and one brother, Dudley Jones.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian R. Jones of Vicksburg; two sons, Clayton S. Jones and Austin G. Jones, both of Vicksburg; three daughters, Sherry J. Kirkland and Cassie M. Jones, both of Vicksburg, and Samantha J. Skipworth of Redwood; three brothers, John W. Jones and Charles L. Jones, both of Vicksburg, and Robert L. Jones of Baton Rouge; four sisters, Judy Johns of Jonesboro, La., Sally A. Thomas of Slidell, La., and Loraine Davenport and Kay White, both of Vicksburg; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Fisher Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lynette Little, pastor of Bovina United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. Monday until the time of services at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn., 38105.

Pallbearers will be Bill Miller, Bob Irish, Bill Dulaney, Ron Farmer, Leon Thompson, Charles Monk, Robert Harper and Shane Bailey.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Walter E. Johnston and Joe Adams.

Robert Lee Marshall

Robert Lee Marshall died Thursday, May 13, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. He was 64.

Mr. Marshall was a resident of Vicksburg and a member of Travelers Rest M.B. Church.

He is survived by his wife, Annie Mae Marshall of Vicksburg; one son, Raymond Marshall of Racine, Wis.; two daughters, Sharon Marshall Sanford of Fort Riley, Kan., and Sherrell Cooper of Memphis; his mother, Lula Mae Springs of Vicksburg; one brother, Ezekiel Springs Jr. of Vicksburg; five sisters, Jo-Elise Cooke of Jackson, Ga., Essie Montgomery of Glendale, Ariz., Vivian Flaggs of Vicksburg, Rosie Williams of Tallulah and Nina Lyons of Little Rock, Ark.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild and nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Travelers Rest M.B. Church. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 1 until 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Family will be present from 5 until 7 p.m.

Dinah Irene Smith

Dinah Irene Smith died Friday, May 14, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. She was 70.

Mrs. Smith was a member of Travis Chapel A.M.E. Church where she served as president of the stewardess board.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harrison and Josephine Spates; her husband, Milton Smith; two sons, Milton Smith Jr. and Jerry Smith; and one daughter, Susie Mae Williams.

She is survived by four sons, Tyler Lee Smith, Kenny Ray Smith, Desi Smith and Marvin Smith, all of Vicksburg; three daughters, Josephine Smith, Tamzella Smith and Theresa Smith, all of Vicksburg; one brother, Harrison Spates Jr. of Chicago; three sisters, Hattie Gray, Theresa Fairchild and Dorothy Lee Carson, all of Chicago; 20 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren and other relatives.
