[5/25/04]A Vicksburg woman was reported in good condition today after being attacked by dogs as she walked to work Sunday.
The fate of the boxers, impounded by police, is undecided.
Police said Mary Lee, 57, 901 Speed St., was on her way to her job at Cedar Grove Inn at 9 a.m. on Oak Street.
Sgt. Kevin Williams said the dogs are owned by Patrick Grandberry, 805 Harris St., and were on a porch before the attack.
Lee underwent surgery at River Region Medical Center Sunday, Williams said, and had been injured on her arms, legs and face. She remained in the hospital, spokesman Diane Gawronski said.
Grandberry faces three misdemeanor charges of violating the city’s leash law. The maximum fine is $78 per violation.
City Prosecutor Bobby Robinson said a municipal court judge will make the decision as to whether a dog should be killed. Williams said the decision will be based on police documentation in the case.
Georgia Lynn, president of the Vicksburg-Warren County Humane Society, said she and the organization have no role in the case. She visited the city pound Monday, she said, because she was curious about boxers’ being involved.
“That is not behavior indicative of that breed,” Lynn said.
She said the dogs’ aggression was clear. “If they could’ve come through the fence to attack me, they would have,” Lynn said.
Williams said the dogs were calm when he and Vicksburg Animal Control Officer Eldridge Skinner arrived at Grandberry’s residence to pick them up.
“They just got in the truck,” Williams said.
