Robert Lee Erves Sr.

Robert Lee “Coon” Erves Sr. died Saturday, June 5, 2004, at University Medical Center in Jackson. He was 67.

Mr. Erves was a lifelong resident of Vicksburg and a member of Hickory Tree Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred Erves Sr. and Hazel Carson Erves, and one sister, Georgia Ann Erves.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Erves; six sons, Robert Erves Jr., James Erves Sr., and Steve Erves, all of Vicksburg, Larry Erves of Atlanta, Dale Erves of Dallas, Texas, and Timothy Erves of Crockett, Calif.; two daughters, Cheryl Erves Steele of Vicksburg and Hazel Diane Leonard of Houston, Texas; one brother, Alfred Erves Jr. of Aurora, Ill.; one sister, Gladys Reed of Vicksburg; 19 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and other relatives including the Carson, Williams and Jones families of Vicksburg.

W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Margie R. Gilmer

Margie R. Gilmer died Saturday, June 5, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. She was 83.

Mrs. Gilmer was born in Repton, Ala., and had lived in Vicksburg since 1983. She was a member of Baggett’s Chapel Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mabrie O. Gilmer, and her parents, Sam F. and Anna Belle Warren Raines.

She is survived by one son, M.L. Gilmer of Vicksburg; three grandchildren, Mary Jane Wooten and Chris Gilmer, both of Vicksburg, and Melisa Ware of Houston, Miss.; five great-grandchildren; four sisters; and one brother.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Riles Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Case, pastor of the Lighthouse Assembly of God Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon Monday until the service.

Sidney Howard

Sidney Howard died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at Franklin Medical Center in Winnsboro, La. He was 80.

Mr. Howard was a lifelong resident of Vicksburg.

He was retired from the Navy as a construction worker and was a member of Mount Calvary M.B. Church.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Johnnie Howard, Willie Howard Jr. and Robert Howard; two sisters, Rosie Armstrong and Thelma Robinson; and his parents, Willie and Missoura Howard.

He is survived by a brother, Moses L. Howard of Tacoma, Wash., and two sisters, Emma L. Sellers of San Francisco, Calif., and Edmonia Robinson of Vicksburg.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mount Calvary M.B. Church. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be at Williams Funeral Services Chapel from 5 until 7 p.m. Monday.

Raymond L. Meeks Sr.

Raymond L. “Bobby” Meeks Sr. died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at University Medical Center in Jackson. He was 63.

Mr. Meeks was a member of the usher board at Mount Pisgah M.B. Church.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Louis Meeks Jr., Oliver Meeks, Edgar Meeks and Theodore Meeks; two sisters, Olivia Meeks Lindsey and Vera Meeks Lee; and his parents, Louis Meeks Sr. and Josephine Roland Meeks.

He is survived by one son, Raymond L. Meeks Jr. of Vicksburg; one daughter, Jacquelyn Meeks of Vicksburg; two brothers, James H. Meeks and Newton Meeks, both of Vicksburg; four sisters, Gladys Meeks Hackett of Sacramento, Calif., Josie B. Meeks Orr of Pomona, Calif., and Dorothy Meeks and Lois Meeks Shields, both of Vicksburg; and other relatives, including Melvina Jones of Vicksburg.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home with the Rev. Dennis Redden officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Peggy Faye Moffit

OAK GROVE Peggy Faye Moffit died Friday, June 4, 2004, at Delta Regional Medical Center in Greenville. She was 54.

Mrs. Moffit was a native of Oak Grove, where she was a member of First United Methodist Church.

A 1967 graduate of Oak Grove High School, she was the co-valedictorian of her class. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority.

She was a veteran of the Army and served as a physical therapist.

She was preceded in death by her father, Claude Turner.

She is survived by her mother, Birdie Ree Turner of Oak Grove; one son, Keith Moffit of Oak Grove; one daughter, Teri Moffit of Oak Grove; one brother, Bill Turner of Oak Grove; one sister, Patricia Turner of Farmerville, La.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Byron Putnam officiating. Burial will follow at New Forest Cemetery in Forest.

Visitation will be at the church from noon Monday until the service.
