James Barnes
James Barnes died Saturday, June 12, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. He was 70.
A resident of Vicksburg, Mr. Barnes worked as a crane operator for Ford Motor Company until his retirement. He was a member of Zion Chapel Church in Detroit, Mich.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Isaac Barnes and Inez Goings Barnes-Holt; five brothers, George Barnes, John Barnes, Steve Rogers, Jimmy Holt and Larry Holt; and a sister, JoAnn Holt.
Survivors include his wife, Adella Barnes of Vicksburg; three sons, Nathaniel Ammon of Glassville, Pa., James Barnes Jr. of Detroit and Ronnie Storks of Port Gibson; two daughters, Roda Barnes and Helena Barnes, both of Vicksburg; four sisters, Fay Holt-Davis, Lula B. Buck, Bertha Dorsey and Myrtis Hicks, all of Port Gibson; four brothers, Curtis Ross and Gregory Polk, both of Port Gibson, William Holt of Vero Beach, Fla., and Willie White of Vicksburg; ten grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Christian Chapel Church in Port Gibson with T.E. Harris officiating. Burial will follow at Scott’s Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home in Port Gibson.
Visitation will be from 1 until 5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. Thursday until the service at the church.
Curtis Mark Englade
Curtis Mark Englade died Monday, June 14, 2004, at North Monroe Medical Center. He was 77.
Mr. Englade was born in Lions, La., to the late Lester Joseph and Stephanie Elfer Englade. He had been a Vicksburg resident since 1946. He served in the Army Air Force in World War II.
Mr. Englade was employed with Illinois Central and Illinois Central Gulf railroad companies for more than 52 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2572, American Legion Post No. 3, Military Order of the Cooties, the 40/8 Company, Disabled Veterans of America and First Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Chesley Johnson Englade.
Survivors include a daughter, Monette Englade Ward of Vicksburg; two sons, Mark Englade of Houston, Texas, and Fred Englade of Monroe; 10 grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and other relatives, including Ethel Bossier of Reserve, La.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Fisher Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Bryant, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Keen, Mike Keen, John Carlisle, Steve Carlisle, Tom Carlisle, Jonathan Oldenburg, W.E. “Bud” Johnson Jr., Gil Culkin, Sonny Hickman and Eric Johnson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Eddie Smith, Wallace W. Raines, Bobby Raines, Rusty Price and members of the VFW Post No. 2572, American Legion Post No. 3 and Military Order of the Cooties.
Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
Jessie James King
Jessie James King died Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Guardian Angel Hospice in Marion, Miss. He was 39.
Mr. King was a former employee of the Vicksburg National Military Park.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph King Sr.; his maternal grandparents, Mack and Viola Thomas; and his paternal grandparents, Jessie and Estelle King.
He is survived by a son, Tromaine Versell of Vicksburg; his mother, Willie Mae Hall King of Vicksburg; five brothers, Leroy King of Chicago and Freddie Hall, Michael King, Claude King and Joseph King, all of Vicksburg; 10 sisters, Thelma Hubbard of San Francisco, Calif., and Vera Wheatley, JoAnn King, Brenda Davis, Claudette King, Deborah Hall , Willie’Lean King, Laura Ann King, Lorine King and Lucille Albert, all of Vicksburg; one granddaughter; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including Rochelle Morrow of Vicksburg.
W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Ella Lea Opperman
Ella Lea Opperman died Sunday, June 13, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. She was 68.
A native of Tallulah, Mrs. Opperman had lived in Vicksburg since 1953. She was a manager at S&S Grocery Store in Redwood for 30 years. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles David Opperman Sr.; a daughter, Susan Jayne Thrash; and her parents, Robert Brewster and Bernice Shivers Hill.
Survivors include two sons, Charles David Opperman Jr. of Jackson and Bruce Lum Opperman of Redwood; two daughters, Denice Opperman Ellender and Melissa Hearn, both of Redwood; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fisher Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. Wednesday until the service at the funeral home.
