Helen Louise Logue Alford

Helen Louise Logue Alford died Monday, June 28, 2004, at Heritage House Retirement Center. She was 93.

A Vicksburg native, Mrs. Alford graduated from Culkin High School and attended Southern Business College. She worked as a deputy clerk in the Warren County sheriff’s office and was chief deputy clerk for the County Circuit Court. She also served as Warren County Circuit Clerk, filling an unexpired term of William J. Foley.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, preparing financial deposits for a number of years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Riley Doyle Alford; her parents, Archie O. and Mary C. Kleinman Logue; two sisters; and six brothers.

Survivors include a daughter, Helen Elizabeth “Mickie” Alford Akenson of Cookeville, Tenn.; four sisters, Virginia O. Logue Hoxie of Brandon, Doris Z. Logue Hosemann of Vicksburg, Mary C. Logue Knox of Scooba and R. Jeanette Logue Noble of Edwards; and one granddaughter, Ashley Britta Akenson of Atlanta.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Fisher Funeral Home with Dr. John G. McCall of Clinton and the Rev. J.L. Noble of Greenville officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Otto A. Logue Jr., Albert L. Hoxie Jr., Clyde H. Knox, Gerald Hosemann, Ken Harper, Albert H. Paxton Jr., Ronald Noble and David Hosemann.

Virginia H. Burrough

BENTONIA Virginia H. Burrough died Sunday, June 27, 2004, at Yazoo Health and Rehab Center in Yazoo City. She was 88.

A resident of Bentonia, Mrs. Burrough was a homemaker and a member of Hebron Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, R.G. “Pete” Burrough; and a son, Dan Burrough.

Survivors include two sons, Dale Burrough of Vicksburg and Kerry Burrough of Bentonia; two daughters, Nancy McGraw of Bentonia and Sara Linnan of Decatur, Ala.; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services were at 11 a.m. today at Hebron Baptist Church with the Rev. Luke Edwards officiating. Burial followed at Hebron Cemetery under the direction of Stricklin-King Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Jerry Burrough, Ray Burrough, Thomas Ray Hilderbrand, Ricky Hilderbrand, Herman Hilderbrand Jr. and Donnie Burrough.

Charles Edward Cox

OAK GROVE Charles Edward Cox died Monday, June 28, 2004, at Carroll Nursing Home in Oak Grove. He was 78.

Mr. Cox was a councilman for Oak Grove for six years before serving as mayor for 26 years. A longtime businessman, he founded Cox Funeral Homes and Flower Shops, Carroll Nursing Home and Kidder-Cox Insurance. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Oak Grove.

He served on the Board of Directors of West Carroll National Bank and was a former member of the Louisiana State Hospital Board.

Mr. Cox was a native of Mer Rouge, La., and was reared in the Bonne Idee community in Morehouse Parish. He was a combat veteran of World War II and Korea, serving as sergeant 1st class with Company A of the 511th Parachute Infantry in the Pacific Theater. He was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart.

In 1947, he graduated from Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science in St. Louis, Mo. He moved to Oak Grove and was employed by Catron-Gay Funeral Home before returning to active duty.

He was named Funeral Director of the Year by the North Louisiana Funeral Directors. He was a member and past president of the Oak Grove Lions Club and Oak Grove Jaycees. He was a member of the Oak Grove Lodge No. 284 F&AM, the Monroe Commandary of the Knights Templar and the Barak Shrine. He was serving as Commander and member of the Catron-Kelly Post of the American Legion and was a member of the Thomas-Tyson Post of the VFW.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Malcolm Cox Sr. and Mary Romie Virginia Burch Cox; five brothers, William Malcolm Cox Jr., Earl Burch Cox, Richard D. Cox, Louis Wilson Cox Sr. and Horace Victor Cox; and four sisters, Gladys Parker, Ella Pickett, Emma Evans and Sarah Ruth Cox.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Sally Williams Cox of Oak Grove; one son, Steven Cox of Oak Grove; one daughter, Lisa Reardon of Oak Grove; two sisters, Mabel Eppinette and Virginia Purtle, both of Bastrop, La.; four grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cox Funeral Home in Oak Grove with the Rev. Byron Putnam officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Wilson Cox, Bill Soniat, Paul Soniat, Thomas Soniat, Bobby Barnett, Doug McIntosh and James Lingo.

Honorary pallbearers will be employees of the Cox family.
